Steel Zip Tops 2016 Tattersall’s Mile Field

The weekend’s only stakes race runs in Brisbane on Saturday with the Pat Duff-trained Steel Zip leading the Tattersall’s Mile 2016 field at Doomben Racecourse.

Set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 4:12pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile Handicap (1600m) has attracted a final field of 12.

Carrying the 59kg top weight from a wide gate 10 draw is Duff’s veteran eight-year-old Steel Zip who has been in stellar form this winter.

First-up at Ipswich in June he ran third to Ninth Legion in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) before a brave fourth to Flamboyer in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast.

The Canadian Silver grey was last seen racing at Grafton on July 13 in the listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) where he finished just a half-length back for third to Smart Volatility.

He has a few hurdles to overcome if he is to enjoy a maiden win in 2016 in the Tattersall’s Mile as he goes up from 55.5kg last start to 59kg on Saturday and sees the mile for the first time since February last year.

The next heaviest weighted in the Tattersall’s Mile field is the Brian Smith-trained Jetset Lad (57.5kg) in gate three with Paul Hammersley retaining the ride on the fellow eight-year-old.

Jetset Lad is a dual winner at the track and distance including his narrow win in last year’s Tattersall’s Mile.

He hasn’t won again since over the past 12 months and needs to improve after a last start 11th of 12 runners behind Benzini at Eagle Farm in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 11 as a $61 roughie.

Going up from 54kg that run Jetset Lad is poorly weighted on the weekend, but will enjoy the drop back in distance.

Smith has also accepted for Feltre who carries 55kg from gate seven with apprentice James Orman replacing Hammersley in the saddle of the Show A Heart five-year-old.

Feltre shoots for back-to-back Brisbane wins after a nearly two length victory in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1830m) on June 25 at Eagle Farm.

Also coming off a last start victory are the John & Chris Meagher trained Harada Bay who saluted over this track and distance on July 9 and Kelly Doughty’s aforementioned Flamboyer from the Gold Coast.

Six-year-old Harada Bay is drawn out in barrier 11 for jockey Luke Dittman on Saturday but drops a kilo down to 55.5kg from the weight he carried to victory here last time out adding to his strong Doomben mile record (8-2-2-3).

Flamboyer meanwhile is drawn the opposite end of the field getting the rails run from barrier one on the back of two recent winter victories.

The Clang five-year-old saluted by nearly three lengths in a Class 6 over 1400m at Eagle Farm two back carrying 59kg before his Glasshouse Handicap success by one and three-quarter lengths at the start of the month.

He has won only two of his 22 Doomben starts to date and is yet to win over a mile, but has experienced local hoop Jeff Lloyd in the saddle again for the Tattersall’s Mile test.

In the outside alley is Ciaron Maher’s Melbourne raider Akavoroun who comes off a second to Harada Bay here a fortnight ago, while the Robert Heathcote-trained Lauterbrunnen comes off a third in the same lead-up.
