Running as Rosehill Race 6 at 2:35pm (AEST) on Saturday’s nine-race program, this year’s $150,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) has attracted 10 hopefuls.

Currently at six of those are under $10 for the win in the Winter Stakes odds.

Two gallopers are co-favourites at $4.50 with Ninth Legion and Better Not Blue hard to split after the finished first and second respectively last start in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at the track.

The Peter Robl-trained Ninth Legion shoots for his third stakes win in as many starts but carries Saturday’s 59kg top weight while the Michelle Ritchie-trained Churchill Downs four-year-old Better Not Blue remains on the 54kg minimum.

The other best in Winter Stakes betting are market mover Oxford Poet ($6) from the Wyong stables of Kim Waugh and the talented Group 3 winning Snippets Land ($6.50) for Peter & Paul Snowden.

With so many livewire chances for the win, will it be a top fancy getting the job done or an upset Winter Stakes 2016 result from the likes of Waller’s wet-track specialist Marenostro ($7.50) in gate one or even Joe Pride’s Winter Dash third placegetter Shadow Lord ($14)?

#3 Tales Of Grimm ($7)

Think Chris Waller can take this out in the form of seven-year-old Tales Of Grimm who comes off a Brisbane win at Eagle Farm three weeks ago in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m). He goes up a kilo and has the outside alley to overcome, but plenty of class and winning form previously at the track. Open field and think the booking of Tommy Berry and fitness of this still lightly veteran is the value bet.

#4 Marenostro ($7.50)

Well-backed runner also from the Waller stables gets the inside run from barrier one on the back of a dead last in the Civic Stakes. Nothing went his way that day on the back of a mile run and he’ll be ready to handle the distance better here. He went back-to-back over 1400m at Rosehill in May – June, can handle a heavy track no issues (7-4-2-1) so rain-affected course and he’s the value with jockey Tye Angland confident.

#1 Ninth Legion ($4.50)

Deserving favourite in flying form on the back of Eye Liner Stakes – Civic Stakes double. Fit and firing on all cylinders, a Group 2 winner that loves this distance (16-4-1-0). Does go up in weights and gives the kilos away with 60kg, but still very hard to knock a fit horse with class.
