Angland After Winter Stakes 2016 Atonement on Marenostro

Jockey Tye Angland will continue his association on the Chris Waller-trained Marenostro in this Saturday’s 2016 Winter Stakes hoping to make amends for two recent Sydney winter failures on the galloper.

A final field of 10 face off in this season’s $150,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) including two the state’s best Waller who has Tales Of Grimm and Marenostro in the mix.

The stablemates are drawn opposite ends of the field for the handicap clash with last start Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) winner at Eagle Farm on June 25 Tales Of Grimm in gate 10 and Marenostro to jump from the inside alley.

Seven-year-old Tales Of Grimm has Tommy Berry aboard for Saturday where he goes up from 55.5kg last start to 56.5kg and pays $7 in the latest Winter Stakes odds at

Winter Stakes betting is led by Peter Robl’s flying 60kg top weight Ninth Legion ($4.40) shooting for three on the trot after taking out the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich and the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill a fortnight back.

The narrow Civic Stakes runner-up Better Not Blue is also fighting back in Winter Stakes betting this Sydney Winter Racing Carnival and is now equal $4.40 favourite to turn the tables on Ninth Legion getting in on the 54kg minimum again.

Waller’s other runner, five-year-old Duelled gelding Marenostro is another Civic Stakes graduate.

He and Angland, who has ridden the horse for his four most recent runs including back-to-back 1400m wins at Rosehill earlier in the winter, could only manage to finish seven lengths off the winner when crossing last (9th) a fortnight back.

Coming back for a mile run the start before gave Marenostro a tough task to overcome in the Civic Stakes however and he is tipped to improve this weekend paying $7.50.

Angland is confident he’ll get the right run this Saturday from barrier one and that the wet track will work in the known mudlark’s favour.

“He was caught three wide on the quick back-up last time and had had enough before the corner,” Angland told Racenet.

“I should find the right spot from the inside barrier and he’s a genuine soft track horse.”

Marenostro has an outstanding record on both Soft (9-3-1-0) and Heavy (7-4-2-1) tracks so the more rain the better.

Angland has a strong book of rides at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with a mount in eight of the nine races on the program.
