The next Queensland Winter Racing Carnival feature is Eagle Farm’s Queensland Cup 2016 on Saturday in Brisbane, betting tips and the latest odds on the staying showdown found below.
One of the country’s few remaining two mile races, this season’s $100,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) runs as Eagle Farm Race 4 at 2:07pm (AEST) and features a field of 10 hopefuls.
Sitting top of the current Queensland Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.35 and firming for the win is the Chris Waller-trained Murphy’s Delight.
Runner-up to stablemate Opinion two back in the Stayers Cup (3200m) over the distance, the in-form Hurricane Run gelding is sure to appreciate getting back out over the extra meters on the back of a third at Randwick on June 25 over 2600m.
The other best fancied in Queensland Cup betting this year are John Thompson’s smart mare Jiayuguan ($3.80) in her first look at the distance, the well-weighted Dubawi mare Viva Espana ($7.50) coming off back-to-back Doomben seconds over 2200m and the now Dale Healey-trained Caloundra Cup fourth placed import Instrumentalist ($8).
So will the top three in betting be the first three over the line or is there value further down the markets from the likes of Pop ‘N’ Scotch ($13) who is a dual runner-up over the two miles or Andrew Williamson’s recent stable acquisition Tunes ($15)?
#3 Tunes ($15)
This Viscount seven-year-old has done the rounds, but Williamson on the Sunny Coast has a way with rejuvenating older stayers and is out to do it again with this 71-start veteran. Two back he ran fifth in the Stayers Cup over two miles, his second run over the distance. He was runner-up over 3200m in mid-March in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup as a 41/1 roughie, crossing only a neck off the winner. If he can return to that form this is an easy win. Ran 10th in the Caloundra Cup last start, a disappointing effort, but he can improve and atone here.
#4 Murphy’s Delight ($2.35)
All the money is on the favourite who has definite claims over the distance after the second in the Stayers Cup two back. He’ll be in the finish but is just a little short to lock in for the win. Still his lead-up form is very strong, extra metres again will suit, Jim Byrne is an experienced hoop and the drop back from 59kg to 55kg here is also a big advantage.
#2 Jiayuguan ($3.80)
Thompson scratched this mare from Thursday’s Grafton Cup field in favour of the two mile test and if she handles the distance, like her recent runs suggest she will, she’ll be a big hope even going up to 57kg here. She had 54kg on her back last start in Rosehill’s Listed Winter Cup (2400m) when fourth to Tucanchoo, perhaps the step up in distance will unlock winning form? Damian Browne is the right hoop for this too.
