Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The action of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival continues at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday with the running of the Queensland Cup 2016.
A small field of just 10 stayers is engaged to face off in this season’s $100,000 Listed Variety Queensland Cup (3200m), the two mile feature to run as Eagle Farm Race 4 at 2:07pm (AEST).
Heading the field and Queensland Cup weights with 59kg is the Dale Healey-trained Instrumentalist, formerly with Sydney’s premier horseman Chris Waller.
The rising eight-year-old import comes off some nice lead-up form around the Queensland tracks, but rises notably in weights from his recent assignments.
Two back he ran third to Maurus in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) before a last start fourth to Amexed in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m).
In both runs Instrumentalist carried the 54kg minimum, but he rises five kilos on the weekend with apprentice James Orman continuing his association with the son of Amadeus Wolf.
Drawn one on the inside of Instrumentalist (6) in barrier five is the John Thompson-trained Teofilo mare Jiayuguan, the five-year-old to carry the second heaviest weight of 57kg.
Queenslander Damian Browne replaces Sam Clipperton in the saddle of the Sydney visitor who comes off back-to-back fourths, the latest behind Tuchanchoo at Rosehill in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) a fortnight back.
Also on 57kg for the Queensland Cup over the 3200m is the Andrew Williamson-trained Tunes who Michael Cahill rides from the inside alley.
The Sunshine Coast-trained Viscount seven-year-old hasn’t won a race since January in Adelaide, but has good form over the distance.
During the autumn at Morphettville he ran fourth to Signoff in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) before a brave second to Purple Smile in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) as a $41 roughie.
His latest run was a 10th of 12 runners in the Caloundra Cup that he is out to atone for here over the extra metres.
Waller meanwhile saddles-up Hurricane Run six-year-old Murphy’s Delight in the Queensland Cup field from barrier eight with Jim Byrne aboard.
Two back the horse was runner-up to stablemate and 2014 Sydney Cup runner-up Opinion in the Stayers Cup (3200m) at Randwick before his last start third at the same track on June 25 over 2600m.
Going back to the two miles should suit Murphy’s Delight who also drops from 59kg last time out to 55kg for his Eagle Farm debut on Saturday.
Also boasting a credible 3200m record is the Liam Birchley-trained Pop ‘N’ Scotch who is a dual runner-up from four previous runs at the distance.
The son of Husson failed to impress when 12th in Flemington’s Listed Ramsden Stakes (3200m) on May 21 however and was also well-beaten in his Caloundra Cup ninth last time out leaving lots of room for improvement.
