Instrumentalist Leads 2016 Queensland Cup Nominations

Dale Healey’s veteran galloper Instrumentalist will have another shot at a Cup win in the Sunshine State this weekend having been entered for Saturday’s Queensland Cup 2016 at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

Nominations for this winter’s $100,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m), one of the few Cup races in Australia still contested over the traditional two mile distance, were extended on Monday after just 10 early entries were received for the handicap clash.

The highest-rated of the current Queensland Cup nominees is Sunshine Coast-trained seven-year-old Instrumentalist who comes off two good runs in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) and Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m).

Two back he was third to Maurus in the Ipswich Cup as a $21 shot before a fourth to Amexed at his home track over the mile and a half beaten only three and a half lengths.

He steps up to the 3200m for the first time if accepted into the Queensland Cup field on the weekend, which will also be European import and former Chris Waller-trained stayer’s maiden run at Eagle Farm.

Also coming off a separate fourth-placed Cup effort is the John Thompson-trained mare Jiayuguan who caught the eye at Rosehill on July 2 finishing just out of the money behind Tucanchoo in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m).

The five-year-old daughter of Teofilo also ran fourth over 2000m at Rosehill the run before and is after her first win since November of last year.

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller has nominated for his Hurricane Run six-year-old Murphy’s Delight to make the trip to Brisbane for the Queensland Cup on Saturday, the galloper having had recent experience over the distance.

On June 11 at Randwick he crossed a close second behind Opinion in the Stayers Cup (3200m) before dropping back to 2600m a fortnight later for a third at the same Sydney track.

He is set to enjoy stepping back up to 3200m on the weekend should Waller accept the Irish stayer into the line-up.

Liam Birchley’s Husson five-year-old Pop ‘N’ Scotch is a dual runner-up from four runs over the two miles, but has been out of form this winter when 12th in the Listed Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington and a distant ninth as a $51 roughie in the Caloundra Cup.

Also nominated for the clash are the likes of the Brian Smith-trained local mare My Diamantine out to improve on an eighth in the Caloundra Cup and the consistent Wayne Walters-trained Dubawi mare Viva Espana.

See below for the current Queensland Cup 2016 nominations, the final field and barriers for which are out on Wednesday.
