Fell Swoop Aimed at Darley Classic 2016

A light Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for Canberra sprinter Fell Swoop is likely to culminate with a 2016 Darley Classic run at Flemington according to trainer Matthew Dale.

Dale is mapping out the spring assault of his Not A Single Doubt gelding Fell Swoop, the rising five-year-old set to target the lucrative $1 million Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on Emirates Stakes Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

A winner of nine of his 16 starts to date the consistent sprinter hasn’t raced since his sixth when only 2.6 lengths away from the winner Music Magnate in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane on May 28.

Dale will keep the horse to less distance during the spring with Fell Swoop’s latest win being the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), also at Doomben, in late April.

Prior to that the classy galloper caught the eye running a brave second to Chautauqua in Randwick’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) during ‘The Championships’ from a wide barrier (10) as an $18 roughie.

That followed a fourth to Griante in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill in March when defeated only 1.5 lengths Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) second to Flamberge in Melbourne in another top elite level performance.

Fell Swoop has an excellent record when resuming of a win and two seconds, including the Oakleigh Plate placing at Caulfield, and Dale hopes the horse can add to that nice fresh record this campaign.

He is eyeing a resuming run for his stable’s speedster in either the $500,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 30 or the $400,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 8.

“He just resumed a light bit of pre-training last week, and he’ll be set for a pretty light spring,” Dale told Racing Victoria this week.

“I’m just finalising his program now but he’s likely to kick off late September, early October.

“The Moir is there, probably the more-likely option is the Schillaci a week later at Caulfield.

“At this stage, I’m only thinking of having two or three runs in the spring but the Darley Classic is on the agenda.”
