Smart Snitzel colt Odyssey Moon backs up from two recent Melbourne runs returning to Flemington Racecourse on Saturday for the AR Creswick Series Final 2016.
The last of four Black-Type features on the nine-event Flemington Finals Day card this weekend, the $120,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Series Final (1200m) jumps as Race 8 at 4:10pm (AEST) and features a field of 14 three-year-olds.
Sitting top of the line-up out wide in barrier 12 with Craig Newitt retaining the ride is Robert Smerdon’s in-form young gun Odyssey Moon.
The talented galloper has won his past two on the trot with a Heavy (8) win over 1300m at Sandown-Hillside followed by a Flemington success down the straight over 1100m a fortnight back.
This weekend Odyssey Moon comes off that heat win into the final and is back in stakes’ company for the first time since his third in the Listed Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington in late May.
That followed a strong autumn campaign that included a second to He’s Our Rokkii in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) in Sydney on April 2 and a third in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m).
Odyssey Moon oozes class also boasting a Group 1 second as a juvenile the autumn before in Randwick’s ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes behind Pride Of Dubai and two other Group 2 placings that campaign.
His only challenge is the rise from 54kg last start to the equal 58.5kg top weight on Saturday in the set weights plus penalties clash.
The other top weight with the same kilos is Mick Price’s Magnus colt Prince Of Brooklyn who comes off a second to Firsthand over 1200m at Moonee Valley on June 18.
A Group 3 winner in Adelaide, Prince Of Brooklyn has just his sixth start on Saturday and shoots for his third win.
Caulfield horseman Price also saddles-up Medalia D’Oro colt El Dorado Mine from barrier four with apprentice Michael Dee to ride the last start Pakenham winner.
Also high up the weights with 57.5kg is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained We’re Sure drawn in barrier seven, the son of Not A Single Doubt second-up after a Beaudesert win late last month.
Darren Weir’s impressive recent trial winner in the wet Sooboog chases his first win since a Rosehill victory over 1100m last September, while John Salanitri’s Street Boss gelding Nat’s The Boss is yet to finish worse than fourth in his nine career runs leading up to Saturday.
Local hope Lord Von Costa is also in top form coming off back-to-back seconds over 1000m and 1100m respectively at Flemington for Stephen Brown and is drawn well in barrier six for jockey Craig Williams, while the rails draw belongs to I Boogi for his second career start.
