Jacquinot Bay Heads 2016 Winter Championship Series Final Field

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained veteran miler Jacquinot Bay is out to extend his winning streak to three on the trot when lining up as top weight in Saturday’s Winter Championship Series Final 2016 at Flemington Racecourse.

Due to run as Flemington Race 7 at 3:30pm (AEST) on Finals Day, this year’s $150,000 Listed VRC Winter Championship Series Final (1600m) has attracted a final field of 14 runners.

Sitting top of the line-up and set to carry the hefty 60kg top weight is Lindsay Park’s rising nine-year-old son of Galileo Jacquinot Bay.

The warhorse lines up for his 46th career run and 11th at Flemington where he boasts three previous wins.

Two of those have come at his latest two starts saluting over 1400m on June 11 and again on June 25.

He carted the same 60kg weight to victory last time out a fortnight back for a narrow victory over By The Grace and with winning form in the wet looks a livewire chance of taking out the Final on Saturday with Flemington currently rated a Heavy (8).

Hayes & Dabernig have also accepted for Group 2 winning Fastnet Rock four-year-old Petrology out to atone for his last start 10th to stablemate Jacquinot Bay, but dropping from 58kg to 54.5kg.

Runner-up in the same lead-up heat, By The Grace is out to turn the tables on his last start conqueror.

The Andrew Noblet-trained God’s Own gelding carried 54.5kg for the narrow placing on the back of a third in the other Jacquinot Bay-won series heat from the start of last month.

This weekend the Balaklava Cup winner drops to 54kg and jumps from a gun barrier three draw with Patrick Moloney coming aboard for the ride.

Along with Jaquinot Bay the other last start winners in the mix are Brian Cox’s Swan Hill  cup winning mare Minnie Downs, the Mick Price-trained Fast And Free, stablemate Onpicalo and Robert Smerdon’s Savoire Vivre mare Iggimacool.

In-form Fastnet Rock seven-year-old Fast And Free is coming off a mile win on a Heavy (9) Bendigo track from June 30 and drops from 57kg that run to Saturday’s 54kg minimum weight.

He was defeated the start before at Moonee Valley by the fellow Price-trained Winter Championship Final hopeful Onpicalo who runs on Saturday without another lead-up.

Hussonet six-year-old Onpicalo is yet to win from five starts at Flemington, more suited to the tighter Moonee Valley circuit where he put 1.75 lengths on Fast And Free over the mile from barrier 14 of 14.

He gets the chance to break his Flemington duck on the weekend from a better barrier five draw, but goes up to 55kg.

Iggimacool meanwhile hadn’t won a race since last September before her improved effort down the Flemington straight over 1400m two weeks ago.

She took on a field of fellow mares that day carrying 57kg and while she’s up against the boys this weekend, enjoys a half-kilo drop in weights with Dwayne Dunn to ride on 56.5kg from barrier 10.

Other notable hopes include Darren Weir’s Snippetson six-year-old Kenjorwood (59.5kg) coming off a third to Onpicalo at the Valley, the fellow Weir-trained Rugged Cross with the rails run and the Lloyd Williams-owned Group 1 performer Chance To Dance (57.5kg).
