Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Last year’s third-placegetter Our Ivanhowe could shoot for a Caulfield Cup 2016 win this spring just three runs into his campaign according to co-trainer Lee Freedman.
The star German import debuted down under for the Freedmans last May before coming back and enjoying a stellar Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival preparation.
Second-up he was runner-up in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington and was next seen running under two lengths away third to the since-retired Mongolian Khan in the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
The world’s richest mile and a half handicap is again on the spring agenda for Our Ivanhowe, the rising seven-year-old Solider Hollow stallion targeting the October 15 feature third-up.
Freedman has enjoyed a plenty of Caulfield Cup success over the years saddling up four wins, two runners-up and two third-placegetters including Our Ivanhowe who was his first in partnership with son Anthony.
His previous Caulfield Cup winners are Mannerism (1992), Paris Lane (1994), Doriemus (1995) and most recently Mummify (2003).
Our Ivanhowe backed up from his Caulfield Cup placing last year running a luckless 10th when under two lengths off Darren Weir’s $101 winner Prince Of Penzance in the $6 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
The horse returned for three unplaced autumn runs but was back to winning form breaking his maiden status in Australian on May 21 with a quarter-length win in Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
Now Freedman is looking at a short lead-up to the Caulfield Cup 2016 with just two lead-up runs into the classic after welcoming Our Ivanhowe back to the team’s Pinecliff stables on the Mornington Peninsula this week.
“He had three weeks off after the Doomben Cup, he has really thrived, those older imports love being in work, so we just gave him three weeks off, boxed him at night and he is back trotting and cantering now,” Freedman told Racing Victoria.
“We are looking forward to the spring with him and hopefully we get some soft tracks with him.”
At this stage the galloper will be set for a first-up run at Caulfield Racecourse in the $500,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 24.
Second-up he’ll run in the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Sunday October 2 before tackling the Caulfield Cup.
“I’m leaning towards the Underwood, he is not a horse that needs a lot of racing to take him in to the Caulfield Cup, it would probably be just that and Turnbull Stakes and then in to the Caulfield Cup,” Freedman confirmed.
Last year’s Cox Plate champion Winx leads the current all-in Caulfield Cup betting markets at $15 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Our Ivanhowe can be found further down the futures Caulfield Cup odds at $21 pre-nominations.
