Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Michael Moroney’s classy three-year-old Tivaci enjoyed a return to winning form in Queensland on Caloundra Cup Day saluting for the punters with success in the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2016.
Ridden by star local hoop Damian Browne, the High Chaparral colt jumped the firming $3.20 favourite to take out the $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).
Browne did everything right on board the now dual Group 3 winning Melbourne galloper posting a one and a quarter-length victory over Peter & Paul Snowden’s improver High Spirit ($6.50).
Former New Zealander Browne was posted fourth on the fence throughout the Sunshine Coast Guineas and admitted he got onto the best part of the Corbould Park track “by accident”.
“I must have found the crown of the track by accident,” Browne told The Courier Mail post-win.
“But in all honestly, everything worked out beautifully. He travelled really nicely and I probably got to the front a little bit too soon because I was going that easy.
“But he just took off and got the job done. Fortunately, he was able to show what we knew he was able to do.”
Rounding out the Sunshine Coast Guineas trifecta in third this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival only two lengths off the winner was Kevin Kemp’s smart filly Sold For Song ($3.50).
She was from disgraced on the quick back-up after her Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) win at Eagle Farm the Saturday before and will now head to the paddock.
“She has done a great job this campaign, and to run home so strongly from last in the Guineas was a great effort,” Kemp said of Sold For Song.
“She will have a break now and I will have a think about where we take her when she comes back.”
Browne had Tivaci settled just off the pace in the Sunshine Coast Guineas before storming home over the closing stages on the Caloundra straight, improving notably on his luckless last start sixth to Tsaritsa in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
“That day in the Queensland Guineas he began terribly and was well back and on the inside of horses,” Browne said.
“He didn’t appreciate that but that day I had no option but to look for a run on the fence which was no good.”
The Flemington-based Moroney was pleased with the win, but admitted Tivaci still had some learning to do as he targeted even bigger races during the upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
“He’s a very good horse – he’s just got to iron his problems out,” he told Racing Victoria.
“It looked like he was going to win by four or five – absolutely bolt in – but then he started wandering out.
“He’s such a good type and such a lovely horse, you’d like to find a stud for him at some stage.
“But he’s not helping himself – he’s got Group 1 talent.”
Moroney said it was great to get a Group race win in Queensland from the winter, and said Tivaci would likely be set for something like the $500,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 10 or even the Group 1 Longines Mile (1600m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“We went up there to win the Queensland Guineas or even the Stradbroke, we think he’s that good,” he said.
“He’s had a lot of bad luck. It’s been a frustrating time for him.
“In the spring he’ll be aimed at the Group 1 mile (races).
“We’ll probably leave him a colt for the spring at least, because we’d like to find a stud for him.”
