Amexed Scores Upset 2016 Caloundra Cup Result

Brisbane horseman Tony Gollan might have been poolside in Bali on holidays over the weekend, but his heart was at home in Queensland cheering on his upset Caloundra Cup 2016 winner Amexed home on Saturday.

Gollan was overseas enjoying his annual holiday with his wife as the $176,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) was run and won the Sunshine Coast by his Pentire five-year-old Amexed, but managed to live stream the race on his mobile.

“I streamed the race to my phone and people at the Beach Club were looking at me very strangely when I started cheering like a madman,” Gollan told The Sunday Mail.

“To be honest, I thought he would win if he ran at his best and I wasn’t worried about anything else in the race.

“He has had a stack of little things go wrong with him over the last couple of years but I always knew he had the ability. The mojitos are tasting even better now.”

Gollan may have been confident enough to take the juicy odds on Amexed, but all the money in Caloundra Cup betting this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival was on David Vandyke’s now locally-trained Ipswich Cup winner Maurus.

Shooting for a Queensland winter cups double, the odds-on favourite was disappointing with Damian Browne finishing over three and a half lengths back for fifth aboard Maurus ($1.50) who failed to fire.

“I thought he was very disappointing,” Vandyke said of the beaten favourite.

“It is interesting that he has now had two goes at 2400m and has gone no good on both occasions, but there is no excuses there from me.”

Amexed was another last start winner in the mix, the gelding having saluted over 2150m at Ipswich on Cup Day, June 18.

He improved off that run again with former South African hoop Robbie Fradd retaining the ride, guiding Amexed ($19) to a 1.3 length victory over Michael Nolan’s Ipswich Cup runner-up Jumbo Prince ($8) from Toowoomba who was second past the post again.

“I am still happy to run second and I thought he did a very good job,” Nolan said, despite confirming he thought Jumbo Prince would be runner-up to Maurus in his first attempt at the mile and a half.

Rounding out the Caloundra Cup trifecta in third, two lengths off the winner, was the Noel Doyle-trained Authorized mare from the Gold Coast All Clear ($26).

Gollan confirmed plans to likely press onto the $160,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) with Amexed on July 14.

“I always thought he was a good horse, from the time he won the Rough Habit as a three-year-old and then ran well in the Derby,” Gollan said.

“But we have had a stack of problems with him over the last two years.

“They were the little one percenters. For instance, he would get a virus and then come back from that and then hit himself with a hock.

“I was always trying to get him right and it was a bit frustrating at times. He just couldn’t catch a break but I am so pleased that everything has started to go right for him.”
