Anatola On Track for Sir John Monash Stakes 2016

Caulfield’s Mick Price is looking to get a gauge on the class of his young filly Anatola who runs at her home track this weekend ahead of a possible run in the 2016 Sir John Monash Stakes later this month.

The three-year-old daughter of More Than Ready out of Group 2 winner Wager has had three runs to date for two wins and a third in the ideal start to her career under former trainer, the now-suspended Peter Moody.

Her latest victory was over 1200m in February on a Heavy (8) track before she crossed third as the beaten favourite in early February over 1200m at Moonee Valley when swamped late in the run.

She runs again for the first time since off a lengthy stint in the paddock, racing at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday in the $80,000 Sheen Group Plate (1100m).

In the 15-starter field she jumps from barrier five with Craig Newitt in the saddle, and the bookies are taking no chances on her first-up.

With Price full of praise for his promising youngster, Anatola is the current $3.40 favourite and market mover at to pick-up where she left off.

Newitt is confident in his mount’s abilities and also said the upcoming end-of-winter features and early Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival lead-ups Price has in mind look ideal for her.

“She’s very good,” Newitt told AAP ahead of his first official start on her this weekend.

“She should be unbeaten, I think. Her first two starts were very impressive and when she ran third she didn’t have a great deal of luck.

“This is her first preparation with Mick and her gallops have been great and her trials have been super. She’ll be in the frame for a long way.

“I trialled her a couple of weeks ago and she ran second but I had plenty of horse left underneath me.

“She wasn’t there to have a gut buster. She’s a natural little running filly so she’ll be hard to beat on Saturday.”

Her first possible Group assignment could be as soon as July 16 in the $150,000 Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).

Price has also mentioned the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later back at Caulfield on July 30, and Newitt is right on board.

“Those sorts of races would be right up her alley,” he said.
