Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In a wide open Winter Cup 2016 betting market at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday the bookies are tipping the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Tucanchoo to get the job done after some stellar winter form.
This year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Winter Cup (2400m) runs as Civic Stakes Day Race 4 at 1:10pm (AEST) and features a small field of just seven stayers.
Five of those are under $10 in the latest Winter Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including in-form Pentire six-year-old Tucanchoo at $2.35 for the win.
Jumping from barrier five with Christian Reith replacing Paul Hammersley in the saddle, the gelding has won three of his past four starts.
Last weekend he raced at Eagle Farm and finished a close second to Index Linked when defeated only a quarter-length in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m).
He drops in class then this weekend but rises in distance up to 2400m for just the second time.
The bookmakers are taking no chances in the small field however with Tucanchoo getting in on the 54kg minimum weight once again.
Occupying the second line of Winter Cup betting at $3.90 is the David Payne-trained Foreign Prince, a five-year-old son of High Chaparral who comes off back-to-back wins at the track.
After an 1800m win on a Heavy (10) track on June 4 the gelding returned a fortnight later and won by a runaway three lengths over 2000m on a Soft (7) course.
There is set to be plenty of give in the track again this weekend, which will suit known mudlark Foreign Prince, who has his first run over the mile and a half.
Third favourite in the markets paying $5.50 is another galloper stretching out over the distance for the first time, Loophole, who has been racing like he needs the extra metres.
Prepared by Sydney’s best Chris Waller, Loophole jumps from gate two on 54.5kg with Tim Clark in the saddle of the Lonhro six-year-old whose last two runs produced thirds behind Foreign Prince at Rosehill.
He drops from 57kg last time out however so gets the weight advantage over Foreign Prince who goes up from 53kg that run to 56kg for Saturday’s rematch.
Rounding out the single figure hopes are Waller’s 61kg top weight Junoob ($7.50) in barrier four with Blake Shinn in the saddle of the rising nine-year-old who ran third in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) just two runs back and the rails-drawn Jiayuguan.
The early money is there for Sam Clipperton’s mount Jiayuguan, the John Thompson-trained Teofilo mare out to improve on a last start fourth to Foreign Prince.
The five-year-old will eat up the extra 400m on Saturday however boasting an impressive record of three wins and a second from six previous starts over 2400m.
