Stratum Star Tops 2016 Glasshouse Handicap Field & Weights

Darren Weir’s classy stallion Stratum Star gets the chance to break a notable winning drought when dropping in class for Saturday’s Glasshouse Handicap 2016 at the Sunshine Coast.

A key support act on the Caloundra Cup Day card, this year’s $175,000 Listed HMR Projects Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) is set to run as Sunshine Coast Race 6 at 3:17pm (AEST).

There are a dozen final acceptors for the quality handicap clash, weights for which are led by Stratum Star with a hefty 61kg.

Kerrin McEvoy rides the four-year-old from barrier two, Stratum Star after his first win since a Group 3 over 2000m on Caulfield Cup Day last October.

He was brave during the autumn including second to Turn Me Loose in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne and also comes off a good last-start effort.

After a disappointing last (13th) in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) two back over an unsuitably short distance, the horse improved and crossed only a half-length away third to Spill The Beans at Eagle Farm on June 11 in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m).

He goes up from 59kg that day to his big weight on the weekend, but drops in class and has a strong record over the distance (9-3-2-2).

Following in the weights and drawn one on Stratum Star’s inside with barrier one is Tony Pike’s New Zealand raider Sacred Star (59kg).

Vinnie Colgan sticks with the Flying Spur six-year-old after guiding him for a fifth to Under The Louvre as a roughie hope ($61) in the Group 1 Stradroke Handicap (1400m).

A dual Group 1 winner last year back home in New Zealand, the Cambridge-trained Stratum Star ran fifth in the 2014 Stradbroke sixth last year.

He surprised Pike with his solid effort again this season and if he runs well on the weekend, could back-up on July 13 at Grafton in the Ramornie Handicap.

Former hoop-turned-trainer Peter Robl has accepted last start Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) winner at Ipswich Ninth Legion in both the Glasshouse in Queensland on the weekend as well as Sydney’s Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill.

He has the 59kg top weight in the Sydney clash, but 58.5kg in Queensland should he run from a wide barrier 11 (of 12) draw with Damian Browne on standby for the ride.

Also coming off a good lead-up run are the Pat Duff-trained veteran eight-year-old grey Steel Zip (7) and Robert Heathcote’s Saluter (3) allocated 56kg and 54.5kg respectively.

Steel Zip enjoyed a strong first-up third in the Eye Liner Stakes a fortnight back behind Ninth Legion carrying 2.5kg more than his weight this weekend, Michael Cahill aboard for Saturday.

Brad Stewart is set to retain the ride on Heathcote’s Commands six-year-old Saluter who won over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast, his third victory from four runs at the track, before his second last weekend in Brisbane behind Into The Red in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) when nosed out in the final stride.
