Michael Moroney’s top-rated three-year-old Tivaci has come up trumps with barrier two in Saturday’s Sunshine Coast Guineas 2016 field at Caloundra.
Due to run as Race 5 at 2:37pm (AEST) on the last of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival meetings, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) has attracted a final field of 15 youngsters.
Heading the line-up is Victorian raider Tivaci, the High Chaparral colt out to improve on his sixth behind Tsaritsa when beaten only two lengths in Eagle Farm’s Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on June 11.
Searching for his first win since a protest victory over subsequent Australian Guineas winner Palentino in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in late February, Tivaci jumps from a good inside draw and Damian Browne retains the ride.
Of the three last-start winners accepted for the Sunshine Coast Guineas this weekend the headliner is Kevin Kemp’s smart Toowoomba-trained filly Sold For Song.
She is drawn wide out in gate 12 for apprentice James Orman to overcome in the mile feature, but has been in flying form this campaign.
From eight starts the Collate filly boasts three wins, three seconds and a third in the Queensland Guineas two back.
She went two better last weekend winning the Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) at Eagle Farm and is on the short back-up into the Sunshine Coast Guineas.
Her record at Caloundra is also good with a win and a second, which came in April’s Listed Mick Dittman Stakes (1000m) behind Divine Centuri, but she has had just the one previous start over 1600m.
The other runners looking to string back-to-back wins together are the Kelly Doughty-trained Gold Coast-trained Time To Torque (7) who Michael Cahill rides and local Flying Spur gelding Bold Avenue (11) coming off a 1600m win at Rockhampton.
Along with Sold For Song there are three other fillies taking on the boys in the Sunshine Coast Guineas: Roxy Rhythm (8), Madame De Ban (13) and Passion In Flight (6).
The widest drawn of the runners is the Matthew Dunn-trained Perfect Dare (15), veteran Queensland hoop Jim Byrne continuing his association with the son of Fasntet Rock who comes off fifths in the Queensland Guineas and Daybreak Lover.
At the opposite end of the field with the rails run from gate one is Leon & Troy Corstens’ Starspangledbanner colt Mr Individual, out to atone for a luckless Queensland Guineas 10th.
The proven miler won a Gold Coast trial over 1000m on June 23 and chases his second win over 1600m from three starts at the distance.
Other notable hopes include the Stuart Kendrick-trained local Patronizing who has won two from eight at the track to date and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Queensland Guineas fourth-placed colt High Spirit.
