Warwick Stakes 2016 Return for Winx

Trainer Chris Waller has confirmed a three-race Sydney bid for his superstar mare Winx before she heads to Melbourne this spring starting with next month’s 2016 Warwick Stakes.

The superstar daughter of Street Cry is gearing up for her latest campaign that will culminate with a title defence in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22.

She dominates pre-nomination Cox Plate betting at $3 through Ladbrokes.com.au to go back-to-back in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship for the first time since So You Think (2009-10).

Before she even heads to Victoria however Waller will give the Sydney punters an early look at his $6.67 million earner in three weight-for-age runs in New South Wales.

He has scheduled a first-up run for the rising five-year-old in the $250,000 Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 20 where Winx will be out to extend her undefeated streak to 10 consecutive wins.

Second-up on September 3 she’ll return to Randwick for the $250,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) before her first elite level run of the season in the $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later.

It is a different path to the Cox Plate than last year when Winx won the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in Sydney ahead of her major Melbourne triumph.

Waller has an outstanding recent record in the George Main Stakes results having prepared three of the past four winners with Shoot Out (2012), Sacred Falls (2014) and Kermadec (2015).

After the George Main, Winx will head south to Victoria for the Cox Plate.

She has been back in work for Waller for the past two weeks along with a number of her Group 1 winning stablemates including Preferment who will chase successive Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) wins at Flemington this season.

Waller also has his star youngster Japonisme back in work training at the Gold Coast whose major spring aim is the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, a race Waller won last November with Delectation.
