James Cummings is hoping his first-up flyer Sultry Feeling can continue her good record when fresh and score a Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara win on Saturday in her career swansong.
The four-year-old daughter of Encosta De Lago is one of a number of mares heading to the breeding barn after contesting the season’s final Group 1 race at Eagle Farm Racecourse on the weekend.
A final field of 16 will contest this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Club Tiara (1400m) including the widely-drawn Sultry Feeling.
She jumps from gate 14, which last produced a Tiara winner in 2012 with Pear Tart, with in-form Brisbane apprentice James Orman booked for the ride.
Orman sits top of the current Queensland Apprentices’ Premiership, his 134 winners in the Sunshine State this season 37-1/2 more than any other hoop, and third in the Brisbane Jockeys’ Premiership having ridden 62 winners, just 2-1/2 wins behind veteran Jim Byrne.
“He’s riding very well and we’re thinking long term and happy to give him a chance,” Cummings told Racenet.
“Saturday won’t be the last time we use him.
“He hasn’t ridden a Group I winner yet but you don’t ride as many winners has he has this season if you’re not good at what you do.”
Sultry Feeling meanwhile hasn’t raced since her 12th to Precious Gem, an $8 hope in Tattersall’s Tiara odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in early May.
She’s had the freshen-up since and is tipped to improve, Cummings hoping she can return to winning form before heading to stud at Gooree Farm.
“Nothing went right for her in Adelaide,” he said.
“She was put out of play when the horse fell so it’s a complete forget run.
“She’s seven weeks between runs, freshened up nicely and I’m looking forward to taking her to the races on Saturday.
“I think she’ll run well. She flies when she’s fresh.”
A five-time winner from 21 career starts to date, three of her victories have come when fresh and she chases her first victory since taking out the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) – Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) double in Sydney earlier this year.
“This is it for her so hopefully she gets the message and can do what so many other horses do at their last start and win,” Cummings said.
“It’s uncanny how often it happens.”
Sultry Feeling currently pays $26 in the Tattersall’s Tiara betting markets; clear favourite Azkadellia at $2.40 and firming tipped to atone for her loss in the Stradbroke last start.
