Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The opening Black-Type on the Tattersall’s Tiara Day card in Brisbane on Saturday is the 2016 Spear Chief Handicap, betting tips for the Eagle Farm gallop found below.
Due to jump as Race 3 at 12:07pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed FKG Group Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) features a final field of eight hopefuls.
Spear Chief Handicap betting at Ladbrokes.com.au features four single-figure hopes led by Robert Heathcote’s last start Listed The Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) winner Hopfgarten ($2.60).
Drawn in gate seven and charged with carrying the 60.5kg top weight this weekend, local Mossman gelding Hopfgarten overcame gate 16 of 17 to take out The Wayne Wilson on Stradbroke Day.
He goes up from 58.5kg that run, but boasts an outstanding record at Eagle Farm of five wins, two seconds and a third from 12 starts at the track.
So can Hopfgarten score back-to-back stakes wins this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival or is there up upset Spear Chief Handicap result pending from the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Wayne Wilson third placed Amovatio ($3.60) who won the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) earlier this season, his stablemate Tales Of Grimm ($6) to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from barrier three or the Liam Birchley-trained Pins stallion Beckham ($6.50)?
#6 Beckham ($6.50)
This five-year-old from local horseman Birchley is on the quick back-up having run a close second from the outside alley (11 of 11) last Saturday at Ipswich in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m). If he handles the short turnaround he is definitely in it having won at Brisbane the start before. The distance is also a test as he’s only won up to 1350m to date, but he is well weighted on the 54kg minimum and will get a gun run from barrier four with Jeff Lloyd aboard.
#1 Hopfgarten ($2.60)
Lots of boxes ticked by the locally-trained favourite who is a multiple stakes winner with the best record at the track (12-5-2-1). Gets the two weeks between runs, goes up in the kilos but faces a field have the size of that he beat in The Wayne Wilson from an outside alley. One of Queensland’s best Damian Browne retains the ride and with this the ideal course / distance, Hopfgarten has the form to overcome the top weight.
#7 Electric Power ($13)
Good odds on offer for this smart Kris Lees-trained mare from Newcastle who ran third in the mud carrying 57.5kg over 1400m last start at Randwick. She drops to 54kg this weekend, was beaten only three lengths by this weekend’s 2016 Tattersall’s Tiara second favourite Danish Twist in the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone the run before when eighth as a $71 roughie and has winning form over 1500m (3-1-1-0). She’ll be closing late and has a bit of class about her.
