Toowoomba trainer Kevin Kemp is hoping his promising filly Sold For Song can break away from her last start conqueror Tsaritsa and turn the tables on Chris Waller’s Queensland Guineas winner in the Daybreak Lover Stakes on Saturday.
A fortnight ago Kemp’s three-year-old daughter of Collate crossed only 1.6 lengths away third to Tsaritsa in an all-filly trifecta at Eagle Farm in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
Both Sold For Song and Tsaritsa were nominated for a return to the track this Saturday taking on the older mares in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
The season’s leading Group 1 winning trainer Waller and Kemp both opted to bypass the final Group 1 of the season and instead accept their fillies for the $125,000 Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.
Unsurprisingly the in-form Dane Shadow filly Tsaritsa opened the short $2.05 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au to win this weekend and keep her undefeated record this time in intact.
Sold For Song meanwhile occupies the second line of Daybreak Lover Stakes odds at $4.20 with apprentice James Orman retaining the ride from barrier seven.
Tsaritsa meanwhile has had a jockey change with her Guineas winning hoop Joao Moreira replaced by Hugh Bowman who rides the favourite from the inside alley in the last on Tatt’s Tiara Day.
In the Queensland Guineas Tsaritsa carried 55kg to victory, the same weight as Sold For Song, but in the Daybreak the latter gets the weight advantage.
Penalised for her Group 2 success, Tsaritsa has 57kg while Sold For Song gets in on 54.5kg, an advantage Kemp hopes will make all the difference on the line.
“Many critics are saying the Daybreak Lover is the race of the day with not only Sold For Song and Tsaritsa but also good horses such as Perfect Dare, Salmanazar, Shotacross The Bow, Sagaronne etc in the field,” Kemp told AAP.
“But we had a good look at the weights and my filly gets in with 54.5kg which means she is getting 2-1/2 kilograms off Tsaritsa.
“Also in the Tiara she would have been only one kilo under the older mares.”
Kemp added that with the draw, instructions for Orman will be to take it easy in the early stages to leave enough in the tank to challenge Tsaritsa for the win.
“I will tell Jim not to push her along too hard but if we can get a bit closer to Tsaritsa in the run we will give her something to worry about,” he said.
All going to plan and Kemp will head south with Sold For Song during the spring after a possible winter swansong in Saturday week’s $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).
“Depending on how she pulls up we might go to the Sunshine Coast on Saturday week for one final run this winter,” he said.
“She has raced well at the Sunshine Coast as the big track suits her.”
