2016 Sunshine Coast Guineas Aim for Mr Individual

A winning Gold Coast trial on Thursday morning has confirmed plans to race on this prep with the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained colt Mr Individual who is on track for Saturday week’s Sunshine Coast Guineas 2016.

The Brad Spicer-raced son of Starspangledbanner failed to make an impression last start at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 11, running 10th to the Chris Waller-trained filly Tsaritsa in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).

Resisting the temptation to run Tsaritsa in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), Waller saddles-up his Group 2 winner in Saturday’s $125,000 Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m) against her own age.

Connections of Queensland Guineas flop Mr Individual meanwhile ran the three-year-old in an open 1000m trial at the Gold Coast, which he won with Queensland hoop Glen Colless in the saddle.

Managing part-owner Spicer was impressed enough with the successful hit-out that he subsequently confirmed plans to run the youngster on July 2 in the $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) with Colless to retain the ride.

“I just got off the phone to Leon and he said that Glen was really happy, that he got a feel of the horse today because he can be quite headstrong,” Spicer told Racing Victoria.

“I think it will be beneficial for everyone that Glen has had a sit on him and hopefully we see the best of Mr Individual at the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Individual, who donned a one-eyed blinker for his Gold Coast trial win, is trained out of Flemington and has won three of his eight starts to date, but is yet to win in stakes’ company.

“All the reports are that he handled the reverse direction much better in today’s trial than he did at Eagle Farm last start so hopefully (that) transpires in to an improved race performance next Saturday,” Spicer added.

Also on track for a run in the Sunshine Coast Guineas, won last year by Waller’s subsequent Cox Plate hero Winx, is fellow Melbourne-trained youngster Tivaci.

Damian Browne is booked to partner Michael Moroney’s Group 3 winning High Chaparral colt who comes off a sixth in the Queensland Guineas beaten two lengths by Tsaritsa.
