Robert Heathcote’s last start The Wayne Wilson Mile winner Hopfgarten shoots for back-to-back Brisbane Black-Type wins this weekend lining up in the Spear Chief Handicap 2016 at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
On the back of a close fourth to Mighty Lucky at Doomben in the Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup (1615m) in late May when beaten only 1.7 lengths, Mossman five-year-old Hopfgarten posted his 11th career win on June 11.
The gelding carted 58.5kg to victory from barrier 16 of 17 in the Listed The Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm where he returns this Saturday for the $100,000 Listed FKG Group Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) on Tattersall’s Tiara Day.
Hopfgarten faces just seven rivals in the clash and shoots for his sixth win from 13 starts at the Eagle Farm track.
He drops in distance but goes up to the 60.5kg top weight with Damian Browne continuing his association from barrier seven.
Heathcote has also accepted for stablemate Bewhatyouwannabe who jumps one inside of Hopfgarten from gate six with Michael Cahill staying on the Fastnet Rock six-year-old.
Bewhatyouwannabe won three back at the Sunshine Coast in Listed class over the mile in late April before a fifth at Doomben behind Rudy in the Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m).
Last time out he finished second last when 16th in The Wayne Wilson as a $41 roughie, a run he’s out to atone for this weekend dropping back from 57kg to the 54kg minimum in the Spear Chief.
Following Hopfgarten in the weights meanwhile are the Chris Waller-trained duo of Amovatio (60kg) and Tales Of Grimm (55.5kg) jumping from gates five and three respectively.
Hugh Bowman partners Al Maher five-year-old Amovatio who shoots for his first win since the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) on April 30.
He backed up from that Group 3 success with a second in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m), the race last year’s Spear Chief Handicap winner Frespanol (2015) also ran second in before his Brisbane success.
Amovatio has had two runs since the Scone Cup running eighth in the Lord Mayors Cup and third in the Wayne Wilson a fortnight back on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
Waller’s other runner Tales Of Grimm will have Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle on Saturday, the veteran seven-year-old having run fourth on a Heavy (10) Rosehill track on June 4 over 1800m following a Hawkesbury Cup seventh and Scone Cup 10th.
On a quick seven day back-up after running second to Ninth Legion at Ipswich last Saturday in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) is the Liam Birchley-trained Pins stallion Beckham, while the rails run belongs to the Barry Baldwin-trained Glendara.
