Maurus Wins 2016 Ipswich Cup for Vandyke

Newly located from Sydney to Caloundra, trainer David Vandyke celebrated a winning double at Ipswich Racecourse over the weekend led by his gutsy stayer Maurus in the Ipswich Cup 2016.

After winning the first on Saturday with Blackjack Bella taking out the Ipswich Mile, the best was yet to come for Vandyke whose Medicean five-year-old Maurus saluted for the punters in the $175,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Coming off a last start fifth to Our Ivanhowe in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), Maurus relished the step back in class for his Ipswich Cup bid and jumped the $2.50 favourite.

Sunshine Coast-based hoop Damian Browne found himself settled at the back of the field after jumping from the outside barrier (10 of 10) on Maurus, the jockey out to improve on his third aboard Darci Be Good in last year’s Ipswich Cup.

Vandyke was nervous mid-race when it looked like Maurus would be left out of the finish.

The gallant galloper however dug deep and surged from last-to-first closing hard over the final 600m, and had a commanding three and a half lengths to spare over the Michael Nolan-trained runner-up Jumbo Prince ($6).

“I was happy enough when Damian went back to last but I must admit I was a bit nervous when Damian took off and made a wide run,” Vandyke told AAP post-win on Saturday.

“I could see visions of the Doomben Cup where he travelled wide a long way and then ran fifth. But Damian had a strong hold on him and they were going to win a long way out.”

Even more impressive was the weight he carried to victory, Maurus setting a new metric weight record in the race with 58kg.

That is the most carried by an Ipswich Cup winner since the metric system was introduced in 1971 and also second to only one other champion since Sharpley saluted with 9 stone 3 lbs (58.5kg) back in 1961.

“He is a very good horse and it was Damian’s first ride for me. He is a very good jockey,” Vandyke added of Maurus who was sweating up pre-race, not uncommon for the horse his trainer described as nervous.

In third rounding out the Ipswich Cup trifecta this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival was the Dale Healey-trained Instrumentalist ($21), the seven-year-old beaten nearly seven lengths.

The Group 1 winning Vandyke was thrilled with the Ipswich Cup success for both he and connections at Waratah Thoroughbreds.

“This win really means something. It is my first stakes win as a trainer in Queensland and it was for Paul Fudge’s Waratah Syndicate who have been great supporters,” he said.

Vandyke confirmed plans to target a Sunshine State Cups double with Maurus who is likely to back-up in a fortnight in the $175,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) with Browne to retain the ride.

“I am sure Damian would like to win a Caloundra Cup and so would I,” he said.
