Kiwi raider Benzini will be out to continue his successful raid in Queensland this weekend backing up from a Brisbane Cup win in the Tattersall’s Cup 2016 on Tiara Day.
The Tale Of The Cat six-year-old is prepared at Hunterville in New Zealand by Adrian & Harry Bull and has had two runs down under this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
He is now one of 14 nominees for the $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup Handicap (2200m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday.
Two back he ran third to Darren Weir’s Group 2 winning mare Real Love in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben before running at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Day a fortnight ago winning the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m).
He returns to the same track on Saturday but drops to 2200m looking for back-to-back Group victories in Brisbane.
The other best out of the Brisbane Cup nominated for a rematch in the Tattersall’s Cup this weekend is the Chris Waller-trained third placegetter Junoob.
A rising nine-year-old, Waller’s class import improved on a Premier’s Cup sixth to cross 3.3 lengths off Benzini in the Group 2 over the mile and a half last time out.
That was his first look at the Eagle Farm course, but he has plenty of previous Brisbane experience including his third in the 2014 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
Waller has also nominated for his Brisbane Cup fifth placegetter Index Linked, another eight-year-old import with solid form this campaign including a first-up second in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick back in mid-April.
There are three other last start winners in the Tattersall’s Cup nominations along with Benzini with the John Sargent-trained four-year-old daughter of O’Reilly Swift Lady, fellow mare Tints prepared at Toowoomba by Ben Currie and the Team Hawkes-trained Tucanchoo.
Tucanchoo is a six-year-old son of Pentire who has his first run in Queensland if accepted for Saturday’s clash, the galloper coming off three straight wins including over 2000m at Randwick a fortnight back carrying 58kg.
The New Zealand contingent could also include the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained Ekraar mare Gesemi, a Group 2 placed five-year-old and dual winner over the distance.
Other notable hopes include the John O’Shea-trained Malice coming off a string of nice runs in similar class including his fourth to Hopfgarten in the Listed The Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) on June 11 and the improving Toby Edmonds-trained More Than Ready four-year-old Mr Lebrock from the Gold Coast.
