Chris Waller’s fillies dominate the nominations...
As expected Melbourne trainer Ciaron Maher has nominated his Group 1 winning mare and pre-race favourite Azkadellia for Saturday’s Tattersall’s Tiara 2016 at Eagle Farm Racecourse despite her last start loss in the Stradbroke Handicap.
The talented Shinko King four-year-old is one of 24 fillies and mares making up the early entries for the final elite level race of the season, the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Club Tiara (1400m) taking centre stage in Brisbane on the weekend.
She sits top of the futures Tattersall’s Tiara odds at bookmakers around the country despite her disappointing 10th to Under The Louvre at the same track and distance on June 11 in the Stradbroke Handicap.
Prior to that the Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner was in flying form, including her second to Music Magnate in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).
Maher won last year’s Stradbroke Handicap – Tattersall’s Tiara double with Srikandi (2015), and hopes Azkadellia can atone for her luckless run in the former this weekend on the closing Queensland Winter Racing Carnival meet.
Srikandi was the fourth straighter Tattersall’s Tiara winner to come off a last start victory and this season there are five entries that fit this form including the Chris Waller-trained Tsaritsa.
A flying Dane Shadow filly, three-year-old Tsaritsa won back-to-back Sydney races earlier this prep before her successful Eagle Farm debut on Stradbroke Day in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
Waller, who prepared the 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara winner Red Tracer three years ago, has also nominated for Mossman five-year-old Telepathic who is out to atone for a ninth last time out in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back.
Fillies have a dominant record in the race having won five of the past eight editions, most recently Cosmic Endeavour (2014).
Along with Waller’s Queensland Guineas winner Tsaritsa there are five other three-year-olds in the Tattersall’s Tiara mix this year.
One of those is another Guineas graduate, the Kevin Kemp-trained Collate filly from Toowoomba Sold For Song having run third in the Group 2 lead-up over a mile behind Tsaritsa.
Also among the filly contingent are the Liam Birchley-trained Blueberry Hill and Stuart Kendrick’s Divine Centuri coming off victories in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) from last Saturday at Ipswich and a 1050m Doomben clash on May 14 respectively.
The bookies are also rating the early chances of Henry Dwyer’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner Precious Gem despite her sixth in the Stradbroke as a $41 roughie and the David Pfieffer-trained seven-year-old Cradle Me.
Pfieffer’s veteran mare took out the Dane Ripper Stakes last start, a race that has produced four Tattersall’s Tiara champions since 2009 including recent winners of the double Red Tracer (2013) and Cosmic Endeavour (2014).
The other best out of the Dane Ripper and nominated for the Tattersall’s Tiara rematch this winter include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained runner-up Artistry who is a four-year-old daughter of Shamardal and Luke Oliver’s third placegetter Jessy Belle.
Other noteworthy Tattersall’s Tiara entries include Kris Lees’ four-year-old Dark Jewel classic champ Danish Twist coming off four straight wins in NSW, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal who was third to Blueberry Hill at Ipswich last Saturday and Group 1 The Galaxy winner Griante last seen placing fourth to Precious Gem in the Robert Sangster on May 7 in Adelaide.
