Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Ballarat Cup 2016 in November is a long term option for Matthew Williams’ Warrnambool-based stayer Turnitaround who finally had his winning streak finish-up on the weekend.
The in-form Hard Spun five-year-old won four races on the trot from late April through until a June 4 success over 1800m at Sandown-Hillside.
His flying succession of victories came to an end on Saturday however when he failed to beat home any of his seven rivals crossing last as the beaten $3 favourite in the $90,000 Vital Healthcare Property Trust Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
It was a tough run for the gelding and apprentice hoop Ben Thompson, Turnitaround dropping back to finish last in an effort that still had his trainer Williams eyeing the riches of the upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
“Win, lose or draw he was going to have a month off after this,” Williams told Racing Victoria on Sunday.
“It’s very hard to win when you’re three-wide at Moonee Valley.
“It would’ve been nice to keep the winning streak going, but he needs a break now.”
With his ratings now on the rise, Turnitaround will be aimed at bigger and better things next time in and could make his Black-Type debut first-up in something like the Group 3 Seymour Cup (1600m) in October.
“We might look at kicking off in the Seymour Cup then there’s an 1800m race on Melbourne Cup day,” Williams said.
“There’s also a race on Sandown Cup Day and we’ll also have a look at the Ballarat Cup with him as well.”
Melbourne Cup Day runs at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November, before Sandown Cup Day takes place on the second Saturday of the same month.
The lucrative $300,000 Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) meanwhile runs a week after that on the same day the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) take place at Ascot in Perth.
A number of turf stars have won the Ballarat Cup in recent years including The Offer (2013) who went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Randwick.
