2016 Gai Waterhouse Classic Betting Tips

The third and final Black-Type on Ipswich Cup Day this weekend in Queensland is the Gai Waterhouse Classic 2016, betting tips for the fillies’ and mares’ feature found below.

Scarlet Billows

Closing the card on Saturday as Ipswich Race 8 at 4:33pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) originally attracted a final field of 14 hopefuls.

The early scratching of the Matthew Smith-trained Frill Seeking (11) however leaves 13 in the mix, the updated Gai Waterhouse Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Serenade ($3.20).

A market mover backed in from $3.70, the Star Witness filly is prepared by Michael Moroney in Melbourne and comes off a string of good runs.

The latest was at Doomben on Cup Day, May 21, when runner-up to Palazzo Pubblico in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m).

She gets in on 54kg this weekend taking on the older mares and is set to get a gun run from barrier three with Jeff Lloyd replacing Tim Clark in the saddle.

It is a tight Gai Waterhouse Classic betting market this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival with a further two chances under $5 for the win with Darren Weir’s 59kg top weight Scarlet Billows ($3.90) coming off a Group 1 eighth in the Doomben 10,000 and Echo Gal ($4.60) for the race’s namesake trainer Gai Waterhouse.

So will the best three in betting get the job done or is there value tipping an upset Gai Waterhouse Classic result from the likes of the Liam Birchley-trained Myboycharlie filly Blueberry Hill ($11) or Grant Marshall’s six-year-old Casino Prince mare Slots ($11)?

#1 Scarlet Billows ($3.90)

Scarlet Billows gives the weight away to her rivals carrying 59kg from a wide alley here (12 into 11), but Weir’s Street Boss five-year-old has the class to overcome the kilos and barrier. She won over 1400m at Caulfield in mid-August and has had two Group 1 runs since. The latest of those was an eighth of nine runners in the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) when beaten over eight lengths. That was a tough class of rivals and she’ll be far better placed against her own kind in Listed company here.

#10 Serenade ($3.20)

Firming favourite comes off the gun lead-up form and will take some running down carrying only 54kg from her good gate (3). After a Ballarat win over 1200m in mid-April she ran third in a Listed Adelaide race and then crossed second at Doomben on May 21. She’s had a few weeks between runs and is ready for another top three finish here.

#7 Blueberry Hill ($11)

Good odds on offer for Birchley’s filly who was a gun two-year-old last winter winning in Group 2 company at Doomben, but who has gone over 12 months between wins. Her latest efforts have left a bit to be desired including the eighth to Ghisoni in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) last time out, but if she can improve with the blinkers off here she has potential.
