Hyperion Winner Waiting for Strickland Stakes Wink And A Nod

Perth trainer Justin Warwick will wait and see how the stable’s Hyperion Stakes winner from the weekend Wink And A Nod pulls-up after her latest Group win before confirming plans to back-up in the 2016 Strickland Stakes at the end of the month.

On Saturday at Belmont Park in WA, talented McFlirt six-year-old Wink And A Nod continued her gun Perth Autumn Racing Carnival with success in the $150,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m).

Jumping the $2.25 favourite after her earlier win in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) a fortnight earlier, the flying mare enjoyed her second mile win from three starts over the distance.

The victory capped off a special day for Warwick and his jockey daughter Lucy who rode a total of four races on the eight-event Hyperion Stakes Day card for her father.

In the weight-for-age Hyperion Stakes, Lucy Warwick admitted to being worried when she saw stablemate Zarantz come up on her inside during the closing stages of the race.

But on the line her mount and the punters’ pick Wink And A Nod ($2.25) dug deep and held off the late challenge from five-year-old Choisir gelding Zarantz ($31), coming off a win in the Listed Pinjarra Cup (2300m), to salute by a quarter-length.

“I was pretty filthy when I saw Zarantz on the inside,” Warwick told The West Australian on Saturday.

“I felt sick in the gates. I knew we had three and I didn’t want to be greedy but I just wanted that one more. It’s a special day.”

Warwick rode Zarntz to victory last start, but Peter Knuckey had the ride in the Group 3 on Saturday.

Finishing off a tight Hyperion Stakes trifecta in third only three-quarters off the winner was then $151 roughie Gris Caro from the Bunbry stables of Don Wall, the veteran With Approval seven-year-old stallion improving on an 11th in the Belmont Sprint last time out.

Myalup-based trainer Warwick is now looking at running Wink And A Nod back at Belmont on June 25 in the $150,000 Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m).

“We were pretty flat down the straight,” Warwick said.

“We got a bit held up behind tired runners and the inside runners pinched a couple of lengths.

“It was the last leg of my all-up. I was thinking ‘we’re stuffed here’ but she finds the line like no horse I’ve had before.

“We’ll see (with the Strickland). I’ll have a good look, see how she galloped through the line and how the others galloped through the line.”

If she does back-up, the mare will be chasing the same Belmont Sprint – Strickland Stakes double achieved just 12 months ago by the Darren McAuliffe-trained mare Fuchsia Bandana (2015).
