2016 June Stakes Winner Danish Twist Too Good

After scoring his first stakes’ winning ride, apprentice hoop Koby Jennings said June Stakes 2016 champ Danish Twist was simply “too good” for her rivals at Royal Randwick on Saturday ahead of a possible Tatt’s Tiara run in Queensland.

Kris Lees’ flying four-year-old Dane Shadow mare enjoyed her fourth win on the trot with a cruisy two length success in the $100,000 Listed Sydney Markets Limited June Stakes (1100m).

It followed an equally smart one and a half-length victory in Scone’s Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) where Tim Clark had the mount on May 14.

Jennings came aboard for the weekend’s Black-Type and couldn’t believe how easily she got the job done in the handicap clash going up from 54kg last start to 56kg in the June Stakes.

“I can’t believe how easily Danish Twist won today, she sprinted that quickly underneath me and it was quite soft in the end,” Jennings told the media post-win on Saturday.

“I thought if I could get her to settle early and not do that head-flicking thing which she does, then we would be hard to beat. I was happy the speed was on and she was just too good for them.”

Danish Twist ($7) had the cruisy margin to spare on the line over the Allan Denham-trained Mount Nebo ($17) with Kim Waugh’s Dylan Thomas gelding Oxford Poet ($5.50) just a nose further back for third in a brave finish having led throughout.

The successful June Stakes result was Jennings’ first in stakes class and his second on the Randwick card having ridden the Team Hawkes-trained Tucanchoo to victory in the previous race.

It was his second big Saturday on the trot with the progressive rider enjoying a career-best four victories at Rosehill Guineas the weekend prior.

“The last month or so has been unreal for me,” Jennings said.

“To get on horses like Bullrush and Danish Twist has been amazing, four winners on a Saturday in Sydney and now have a stakes winner.”

The Newcastle-based Lees and connections are now considering sending Danish Twist up to Queensland on June 25 for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

“She is a gem of a mare,” Lees’s stable manager Lucas Miller said.

“Kris took her up to the farm after her win at Scone and freshened her up for a few days.

“She was very good today. She keeps finding ‘grand finals’ and just keeps winning. She has earned her chance at a Group 1 at Eagle Farm in two weeks.”

Should she back-up in the fillies-and-mares’ feature history will be against the Sydney-trained mare as no Tattersall’s Tiara winner has come off a non-Queensland lead-up since Charmview (2005) who ran eighth in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup before her win 11 years ago in the then Winter Stakes.
