Moreira Rides 2016 Queensland Guineas Winner Tsaritsa

Brazilian hoop and Hong Kong champion Joao Moreira showed why they call him the ‘Magic Man’ scoring the Queensland Guineas 2016 win at Eagle Farm aboard Chris Waller’s promising filly Tsaritsa.

Coming off back-to-back wins this campaign in restricted class in Sydney, the three-year-old daughter of Dane Shadow jumped the easing favourite in the $400,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Her price started at $2.80 but she got out to around $4.20 in betting, Tsaritsa jumping from barrier 11 of 18 in the lucrative mile showdown.

Moreira had her settled back off the pace as Unbreakable led the Queensland Guineas field around from Indarra who was out wide and Perfect Dare getting a nice run in third on the rails.

Also racing widely were the likes of the Liam Birchley-trained local Havasay well back in the field and the David Pfieffer-trained Denmagic with Tommy Berry in the saddle.

Unbreakable kept the lead heading into the straight, while a host of rivals made their move including Tsaritsa on the outside.

Doing plenty of work throughout the run, the favourite got home for the punters proving a very classy filly narrowly holding off Denman filly Denmagic ($19) ahead of Kevin Kemp’s Toowoomba-trained daughter of Collate Sold For Song ($15) from the outside alley (18) in an all-filly Queensland Guineas trifecta.

“She was the best one,” Moreira said of Tsaritsa post-win.

“I knew I was going to be strong to the finish and she was.

“She loved the track and it’s playing beautifully.

“You can come from anywhere (on the track) as long as you have the best horse, which I did today.”

Waller is likely to press onto the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) back at Eagle Farm in a fortnight with the Queensland Guineas winner Tsaritsa, a race he won back in 2013 with Red Tracer.

The last three-year-old filly to beat the older mares in the Tatt’s Tiara meanwhile was Cosmic Endeavour in 2014.
