The season’s best three-year-old staying types take to the Eagle Farm track in Brisbane on Saturday for the Queensland Derby 2016, betting tips for the winter showdown detailed below.
Running as Stradbroke Handicap Day Race 8 at 3:00pm (AEST), this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2400m) field has one early scratching and the emergency Slaughter Bay comes in for Colonel Custer.
Sitting top of the Queensland Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.40 for the win is the Darren Weir-trained Howard Be Thy Name who took out the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) two back at Morphettville.
His last start was a brave third in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben and the bookies are tipping him to turn the tables on Chris Waller’s GP winner Mackintosh who is at $4.50 for the rematch this weekend.
So will the top two in Queensland Derby betting battle it out in the quinella or is there value tipping an upset from the likes of the SA Derby runner-up Etymology ($9.50) who has been well backed or the Grand Prix runner-up Eagle Way ($5) from the Gold Coast who has Tommy Berry aboard on Saturday?
#1 Howard Be Thy Name ($4.40)
Weir’s ultra-consistent Redoute’s Choice colt has been in flying form and has firmed into favouritism to score the SA Derby – Queensland Derby double this season. Last year’s SA Derby fourth placegetter Magicool backed-up and won the Queensland edition and we like the form again this year. Howard Be Thy Name’s had the Brisbane tune-up when narrowly beaten for third only a quarter-length off the winner in the Grand Prix Stakes. He’ll relish getting back up to a mile and a half, is drawn barrier two and has Brad Rawiller aboard.
#3 Mackintosh ($4.50)
Waller’s in-form son of Pins hasn’t done a thing wrong since late April and comes off back-to-back Doomben Group 3 wins having scored the Rough Habit – Grand Prix Stakes double. That’s imposing form heading into the Group 1 where he’s up to 2400m for the first time. Should get a lovely run from barrier five with Blake Shinn retaining the ride, and Waller won the Grand Prix – Derby double only a few years ago with Hawkspur (2013).
#2 Etymology ($9.50)
Think the order of the odds are about right and are happy to follow the money coming in for the early market mover Etymology from the Godolphin stables. The John O’Shea-trained New Approach colt ran fifth in the ATC Derby before his second in Flemington’s VRC St Leger over 2800m and his last start second when just a half-length off this weekend’s favourite Howard Be Thy Name in the SA Derby. He’s done a lot of travelling then racing in his fourth state in as many starts with the Queensland run on Saturday and has the outside alley to overcome, but still think the distance is spot on and he’s a top three hope.
