A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
The JJ Atkins 2016 is one of four Group 1 highlights on the Stradbroke Handicap Day card in Brisbane on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds for the Eagle Farm clash found below.
The Tony Pike-trained gelding won his Australian debut two back at the Sunshine Coast before a sixth, beaten only 1.3 lengths, in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight back.
He opened at $5 in JJ Atkins betting but has since firmed right into $4.20 to overcome his wide barrier and relish the step up to a mile with success on Saturday at the roomier Eagle Farm track.
Sacred Elixir’s biggest dangers according to the latest JJ Atkins odds include the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt Souchez ($4.60) who is building momentum at the right time, Peter & Paul Snowden’s BRC Sires’ winner Attention ($7) and the best backed filly in the mix Candikia ($8) for localy horseman Steven O’Dea.
So will the Kiwi get the job done for the punters or is there an upset JJ Atkins result on the cards this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival?
#2 Attention ($7)
Sticking with the BRC Sires’ form this season and think Team Snowden’s Stratum colt Attention has the consistency and class to complete the double last achieved by Sizzling (2012). He only won the Group 2 narrowly last time out, but he improved off his Champagne Classic second the run before and looks like he’ll enjoy a mile. Has a good inside barrier (2) and should get a good run throughout making him hard to beat.
#3 Souchez ($4.60)
Another BRC Sires’ graduate, Godolphin’s nicely-bred youngster finished 1.2 lengths back in fifth off a Champagne Classic third and can improve here with top hoop James McDonald retaining the ride. The colt is a Group 2 winner in Sydney and only needs to handle the extra metres going up to 1600m here. Was slow out of the gates in his two lead-up runs, so if he can get away faster he’ll like the extra room at Eagle Farm and can finish closer.
#11 Redouble ($16)
Good odds on offer for this lightly-raced Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Redoute’s Choice colt. He’s had just two runs to date, winning at Canterbury on debut before a Listed third in Doomben’s Hampden Stakes over 1200m on May 21. Has won a subsequent trial at the Sunshine Coast so is promising and in-form. The mile will be the decider, but he finished off strongly last time out so should enjoy the 1600m.
