Capacity 2016 Queensland Guineas Field Released

A full field of three-year-olds will face off in the Queensland Guineas 2016 at Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend, one of the key support acts on a bumper 10-race Stradbroke Handicap Day card.

Running as Eagle Farm Race 4 at 12:30pm (AEST), this season’s $400,000 Group 2 Mirvac Queensland Guineas (1600m) has attracted a capacity 18 starters plus three emergencies.

Drawn a treat in gate two for the mile showdown is the Matthew Dunn-trained Perfect Dare who veteran hoop Jim Byrne stays aboard.

The Fastnet Rock gelding has his first look at the Eagle Farm track on the weekend and comes off a brave third to the Chris Waller-trained Counterattack, who runs in Saturday’s $1.5 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) on May 21.

The other best out of the Fred Best Classic going up to the 1600m in the Queensland Guineas field is the Michael Moroney-trained Tivaci.

A nicely-bred High Chaparral colt, Tivaci was outclassed in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in March, but caught the eye last time out when 2.3 lengths away fourth in the Fred Best.

He is drawn well in gate six and has Damian Browne aboard this weekend.

A number of last start winners are in the Queensland Guineas mix this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with the John Thompson-trained Invincible Knight, Waller’s flying filly Tsaritsa and the Stuart Kendrick’s Typing – all in wide alleys.

Invincible Knight will jump from the second outside barrier as the son of I Am Invincible shoots for his fourth win on the trot.

He is three-from-four over Saturday’s distance and was last seen saluting in a Benchmark 70 over 1550m at Canterbury on May 25 carrying 60.5kg, the drop back to 57kg at set weights to suit on the weekend.

Tsarita is out in barrier 12 with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira riding the in-form daughter of Dane Shadow who comes off wins at Canterbury (1250m) and Rosehill (1400m) earlier this campaign.

Sunshine Coast-trained Sebring filly Typing meanwhile has barrier 15 and won over the mile at her home track on May 27.

Also drawn double digit gates for the Guineas are the likes of the Desleigh Forster-trained Rothesay colt Too Good To Refuse (17) who finished fifth in the Fred Best, High Chaparral colt High Spirit (16) for Peter & Paul Snowden and Toowoomba-trained Collate filly Sold For Song (21) to be ridden by Queensland’s leading apprentice James Orman.

Sold For Song was in gun form during the summer winning the Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m) in December and came back in nice form with a Listed Mick Dittman (1000m) second at the Sunshine Coast in April.

Her next run was another nice second this time behind Takedown in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m), but on Saturday she’s out to atone for her 12th when sixth lengths off the winner in the Fred Best when stepped up in distance.

Other notable Queensland Guineas hopes include the rails-drawn Royal Tudor coming off a second to Tsaritsa in Sydney, Gunsynd Classic third placed Havasay prepared locally by Liam Birchley, and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Scone and Gosford Guineas placegetter Kimberley Star in gate eight for jockey Sam Clipperton.
