2016 Queensland Derby Field & Barrier Draw: Mackintosh in 5

Chris Waller’s Queensland Derby 2016 favourite Makcintosh has drawn ideally in barrier five as he shoots for four wins on the trot in the mile and a half feature at Eagle Farm on the weekend.

A full field of 18 three-year-olds plus a single emergency is engaged for Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2400m), the set weights clash due to run as Stradbroke Handicap Day Race 8 at 3:00pm (AEST).

In barrier five, but into four if the emergency Slaughter Bay (4) fails to gain a run, is Waller’s flying Pins gelding Mackintosh coming off the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) – Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) winning double at Doomben.

Waller won the 2013 Queensland Derby with Hawkspur, who came off a Grand Prix win as did the previous year’s champ Brambles (2012), and is looking to repeat the feat with Mackintosh on Saturday.

Gate five last produced a Queensland Derby winner in Sonntag (2014) just two years ago while the last champ from barrier four was Lachlan River (2005) just over a decade back.

Waller has a strong hand in the Queensland Derby field this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with the top fancy in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Mackintosh joined by three stablemates: Encosta Line (8), Rodrico (13) and Multifacets (9).

Encosta Line comes off a 1900m win at Rosehill from early May by four lengths, High Chaparral gelding Rodrico saluted over 2000m on May 28 at Randwick and has Joao Moreira in the saddle while Multifacets is out to atone for a dead last (13th) behind his stablemate in the Grand Prix.

The other top acceptor for the Queensland Derby this season is Darren Weir’s Group 1 winning Redoute’s Choice colt Howard Be Thy Name.

A winner of four of his past five starts, the visiting Victorian took out the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) in mid-May before his last start third when only a quarter-length off Mackintosh in the Grand Prix Stakes two weeks back.

Howard Be Thy Name was drawn in gate 10 of 13 for the Derby lead-up, but he and jockey Brad Rawiller have an inside barrier two draw for the Group 1.

Drawn the opposite end of the field out in 19 (into 18) is the John O’Shea-trained New Approach colt Etymology who was runner-up in both the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington in late April and the SA Derby last time out.

The multiple Group 1 performer only has winning form up to 1400m, but the SA Derby performance as well as his credible sixth in the Rosehill Guineas and fifth in the Randwick Guineas earlier this year suggest he can handle the metres on Saturday.

O’Shea and Godolphin are also represented by Eschiele in gate three with Queensland hoop Damian Browne aboard the Grand Prix Stakes fourth placegetter.

Other notable Derby hopes include Desleigh Forster’s Rough Habit Plate runner-up Cylinder Beach (10) out to atone for a ninth in the Grand Prix, the Bryan Guy-trained Grand Prix runner-up Eagle Way (11) from the Gold Coast and Ciaron Maher’s up-and-comer Harvard who just made the cut.
