Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Troy Corstens can’t wait to welcome back to the stable promising filly Modern Wonder who he will set on a Thousand Guineas 2016 path this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
A nicely-bred daughter of Snitzel, the rising three-year-old has had just one run to date for an eye-catching two length win on debut in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) in Adelaide on April 23.
She went straight out to the paddock after to mature and has been doing everything right ahead of her spring return.
“She literally started back yesterday at the beach,” he told Racing Victoria on Tuesday.
“So her and Fromparis Withlove will do about a week down there on the beach just walking in the water and then they’ll come straight back to Flemington.”
Corstens is keen to get a top level win on the board for the Black-Type winner and said early plans were to target the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse in October.
Whether she ends up being a genuine mile hope is yet to be determined and Corstens said the second option was to keep her at shorter distances and aim at a Flemington run during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day.
“It’s hard with Modern Wonder because she’s a little bit brilliant,” he said.
“She’ll be on a Thousand Guineas path but whether she’s going to get the mile or not remains to be seen.
“If she doesn’t look like she’s going to be a mile horse we can just drop her back and have a look at races like the Coolmore if she’s going good enough.”
Co-trainer at Malua Racing, Corstens’ father Leon won the 2012 Thousand Guineas with Commanding Jewel, but success this year will be the first for the duo as a training partnership.
Three fillies meanwhile have beaten home the colts and geldings in the Coolmore Stud Stakes in the past 10 years with Gold Edition (2006), Headway (2009) and most recently Nechita (2012).
Leon Corstens has prepared one previous Coolmore Stud Stakes winner back in 1993 with Brawny Spirit.
Likely early spring targets for Modern Wonder could include the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley at the start of September and the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) later that month.
