2016 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Field Features Souchez

Pre-field favourite for next month’s JJ Atkins, the John O’Shea-trained Souchez is the headline acceptor for Saturday’s BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes 2016 field in Brisbane.

Running as Race 5 at 2:42pm (AEST) on the Doomben 10,000 Day card, this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Mitavite BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) has attracted a final field of 14 two-year-olds.

Drawn in barrier two with one of Sydney’s best hoops James McDonald in the saddle is likely favourite, the Godolphin-raced Souchez.

The consistent Lonhro colt is already leading futures markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) over the Eagle Farm mile on June 11, a position he will maintain with success on Saturday.

Souchez has won two of his four career starts to date, his latest win being in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at home in Sydney on March 12.

He returned with his maiden run in Brisbane on May 14 finishing a close third in a blanket finish when just a quarter-length off the winner Winning Rupert in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

The other best out of the Champagne Classic backing-up in Saturday’s BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes field this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained runner-up Attention.

The Stratum colt won a Group 3 at Rosehill in late March before finishing second last in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 2.

He atoned for that run when narrowly defeated in the Champagne Classic as a $21 outsider in betting and is drawn in gate six for Saturday where he’s unlikely to be found at such generous odds in the BRC Sires’ markets.

There are four last start winners in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes field this season including Tony Pike’s New Zealand raider Sacred Elixir.

He won his down under debut on May 11 over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast, but has a wide barrier 12 of 14 draw for he and jockey Zac Purton to overcome in tougher company on the weekend.

The other last start winners in the mix are Bjorn Baker’s Smart Missile colt Cadogan who won over 1400m at Randwick on May 18, Desleigh Forster’s local Snippetson colt Zendaye who took out a 1200m sprint at Ipswich on May 12 and the John Zielke-trained Show A Heart filly Royal Tithe.

Apprentice Luke Dittman continues his association on Sunshine Coast galloper Royal Tithe this weekend from a nasty gate 13 draw, the consistent filly coming off a narrow win in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial (1200m) at the Gold Coast on May 7.

Ken Russell runner-up Oink is also accepted for Saturday’s BRC Sires’, the Kelly Schweida-trained son of Sebring also drawn in double digits for the rematch with gate 10.

Other notable BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes hopefuls include Kelso Wood’s Snitzel colt Nikitas who was runner-up to Capitalist in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January before an eighth in the Champagne Classic, Zielke’s other runner Dreams Aplenty coming off a fourth in the same traditional lead-up and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Real Saga filly Sylpheed who ran second in the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville last start.
