Snippets Land mustered a monumental late turn of foot to overcome a talented field at Doomben this afternoon and win the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) in impressive fashion.
Snippets Land jumped from barrier 9 well this afternoon, but was settled off the pace of early leaders Coolring, Religify and Sure And Fast who flew the gates and ensured plenty of early tempo would be injected into the race.
Rounding onto the final straight blocked and with plenty to do, jockey Blake Shinn pulled the Snippetson gelding wide and was greeted with a massive turn of foot; the five-year-old pipping a runaway Religify on the line.
Shinn has shown a clear affiliation with Doomben racing through recent seasons, and was pleased with deliver Peter & Paul Snowden a win on 2016 Doomben Cup Day.
“He got in really well at the weights today and slightly awkward draw, but I was able to navigate across pretty well and let the speed go because he settled really nicely,” Shinn said.
“Just manoeuvred my way out into the clear at the turn and he knuckled down and really had that desire to win today, which got him over the line.
“Just rapt to get another winner at this Brisbane Winter Carnival, I love coming up here every year.”
Peter Snowden was on hand for Snippets Land in the BRC Sprint, and revealed the team are unlikely to use the ballot-free entry into the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap offered to this afternoon’s winner.
“It was a super effort,” Snowden said.
“We spoke before the race, Blake and I, and just thought how much pace is there. We didn’t want to get too far back but wanted to be in a position where he could get there, and he ride it nicely.
“Full credit to the horse too; he did a great job. He’s no superstar, but very genuine and put his best foot forward today – probably one of his best wins.
“Little steps with this horse. It’s his Grand Final; he wasn’t going to run here, he was going to run in a month’s time in the Eye Liner at Ipswich.
“I threw a nom in, looking at the weights I thought we looked a chance on paper, and it worked out perfectly.”
Shinn will ride Kiwi raider Volkstok’n’Barrell in the featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane this afternoon, who remains a $6 chance with Ladbrokes.com.au.
