The 2016 The Goodwood headlines the Morphettville racing action this Saturday in Adelaide, betting tips and the latest odds on the sprint feature found below.
Running as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:20pm (local), the field for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) is down from a capacity 20 original acceptors to 18 after the scratching of Griante (3) and Daytona Grey (18).
Black Heart Bart sits top of the updated The Goodwood odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.80 for the win, the Darren Weir-trained Perth expat last seen running second in Sydney’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) in April.
He gets the run of the race from barrier two with Weir shooting for his second The Goodwood win following the success of Platelet (2013) three years ago and is followed in markets this season by the up-in-class Supido ($6).
So can Black Heart Bart score a Group 1 win this weekend or is the value further down The Goodwood markets in the likes of the defending champion Flamberge ($17) jumping from last year’s winning barrier (16) or Robbie Griffiths’ Newmarket Handicap winner earlier in the autumn at Flemington The Quarterback ($14) drawn the rails?
#19 Sheidel ($14)
Sheidel is the value for us in this field from the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig stable. Winner of the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield two back, a race Under The Louvre ran third in, this former Perth-trained mare caught the eye at the Morphettville track a fortnight back running a devastatingly close second in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m). Same course, same distance this weekend and drops to 53.5kg. The mares have a good The Goodwood record over the boys in recent years, and the Robert Sangster has provided two of the past four winners of the latter.
#3 Black Heart Bart ($3.80)
Weir’s deserving favourite has been in gun interstate form this season including two Group 1 seconds. Won a Group 3 at Caulfield two back, has a brilliant 1200m record (6-3-2-0) and is back to that sprint distance off the 1400m of the All Aged. Comes off a WFA run so is down in kilos and drawn to win in barrier two. Favourites have a pretty poor record however, so maybe a better Place bet.
#1 Flamberge ($17)
Formerly with Peter Moody, last year’s The Goodwood winner is now prepared by Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra. He is drawn wide again in 16 the same as 12 months ago, but is still one to consider. Saluted at 20/1 12 months ago in the same race, is two-from-two at the track / distance and recently took out the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate – William Reid double in Melbourne. Last start was a failed 15th in the TJ Smith, but if he bounces back could surprise.
