A smart field of middle-distance sprinters will face off in the 2016 BRC Sprint on Doomben Cup Day in Brisbane on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds for which are found below.
The first of the four Group race highlights on the card, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m) is due to run as Doomben Race 5 at 2:41pm (AEST).
Thirteen hopefuls are in the mix for the quality handicap, including the Todd Willan-trained Artlee from Muswellbrook who is the dominant $2.80 favourite and firming in the BRC Sprint betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Jumping from a gun barrier three draw the Excellent Art five-year-old has a top record of four wins from six starts over Saturday’s 1350m distance, but is on a short seven-day turnaround after a seventh to Malaguerra in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) last weekend.
Artlee is followed in the latest BRC Sprint odds by the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Religify ($6.50) who comes off a Rosehill win over the distance carrying more kilos a fortnight back and Bjorn Baker’s last start Listed Prime Ministers’ Cup winner at the Gold Coast Coolring ($7).
So will the short-priced favourite get the job done or is there an upset BRC Sprint result pending this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival?
#3 Coolring ($7)
Good odds on offer for this in-form Sydney visitor who won at the Gold Coast over 1400m on Hollindale Stakes Day. He got the job done from a wide alley in that Black-Type lead-up and is drawn better this weekend. Jeff Lloyd retains the ride and think even with more weight he is racing well enough to win this at a nice price.
#3 Artlee ($2.80)
Deserving favourite is also racing well this time in. Has Cahill in the saddle from the ideal draw and was third in the Group 3 Victory Stakes (1200m) two back before last Saturday’s Group 1 test. Will relish the return to 1350m, a distance he is four-from-six over, and the step back in class. Has the quick back-up, but down from 58.5kg to 55.5kg this weekend looks a big hope to salute for the punters.
#6 Snippets Land ($15)
Adding the value at double-figures is this well-weighted hope drawn in nine for Blake Shinn who has won the past two editions of this meeting’s feature race – the Group 1 Doomben Cup. Team Snowden saddle-up this five-year-old who ran second in the Prime Minister’s Cup last time out and was runner-up at his only other Doomben assignment to date back in late February with 58.5kg on his back.
