A high class field of local and visiting interstate fillies face off in Saturday’s SA Fillies Classic 2016 at Morphettville Racecourse, betting tips and odds on The Goodwood Day support act found below.
Running as Morphettville Race 3 at 1:45pm (local), this year’s $120,000 Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) field will run at capacity with first emergency Princess Shimmer (4) coming in for the scratched Robert Smerdon-trained Dulverton (20) who drew the outside alley.
Sitting top of the SA Fillies Classic field and betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.60 for the win and who will now jump from the widest gate (16 of 16) is the Anthony Cummings-trained Believe.
South Australian hoop Dom Tourneur jumps on the smart Fastnet Rock filly from Sydney who was third in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) two back before crossing under three lengths away sixth to Abbey Marie in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at the Morphettville track last time out.
She gets the two weeks between runs, has form at the track and will relish getting back out over the extra meters in the SA Fillies Classic.
In an open first half of the SA Fillies Classic odds the next best fancied are the early mover Chabaud ($4.60) for Robert Smerdon who won the Tasmanian Oaks back in February and the Danny O’Brien-trained She’s Got Speed ($6).
So will the best in betting get the job done or is there value tipping an upset from the likes of the in-form Vandancer ($6.50) who has won two of her past three starts back in Victoria or even last start Bendigo winner over 2400m Ashlee Marie ($17)?
#1 Believe ($3.60)
Sticking with the favourite and think getting back out over this distance, the ATC Oaks placegetter will be back to her best and improving on the Australasian Oaks sixth over 2000m from a fortnight ago. She has the widest gate to overcome on Saturday, but the time and class to do it. She’ll be fitter for her Adelaide run, improving off it and knows the track now.
#2 Chabaud ($4.60)
Think the ATC Oaks form from early April will shine through in this easier Group 3 over 2500m. Chabaud ran a close fifth in that race beaten only 1.6 lengths before a fourth over 2000m at Flemington on May 7. That will have kept her fit, the extra metres here will suit better, she took out the Tasmanian Oaks back in February over 2100m and could be hard to hold out with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.
#13 Concubine ($14)
Nice price offered for the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Redoute’s Choice filly who has only won up to 1400m to date, but who comes off a solid run behind subsequent SA Derby winner Howard Be Thy Name at the Morphettville track in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) from late April. Can frank that form again against her own kind in this.
