Early favourite for next month’s Queensland Oaks and last start winner of the Gold Coast Bracelet, Imposing Lass has unsurprisingly also opened top of the odds for The Roses 2016 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
The traditional lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) run at Eagle Farm this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on June 4, the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) features a full field of three-year-old fillies on Doomben Cup Day.
The set weights clash, which has provided four of the past five Queensland Oaks winners, runs as Doomben Race 6 at 3:21pm (AEST) and top of The Roses odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Imposing Lass ($4.80).
Bjorn Baker’s daughter of Makfi posted her third win on the trot a fortnight back in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) and is being kept safe in betting this weekend despite her wide barrier (18).
Imposing Lass is also leading futures Queensland Oaks odds, a position she will retain with a good run on the weekend.
Hot on her heels in The Roses betting for Saturday are fellow Gold Coast Bracelet graduate Falkenberg ($5) and the John O’Shea-trained Group 1 placegetter Ambience ($6).
Drawn a treat in gate six with Queensland hoop Damian Browne to ride, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained More Than Ready Falkenberg was fourth and defeated under two lengths in the Bracelet on May 7.
She is tipped to appreciate the extra metres this weekend and is a livewire hope as is Street Cry filly Ambience racing for the first time since her second as a $41 roughie in Sydney’s Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) on April 9.
The Godolphin-raced Ambience gets the run of the race from gate four in The Roses with James McDonald retaining the ride on the proven staying type.
Rounding out the single-figure hopes are Self Esteem ($8) and Chandana ($9.50) who both come off second place efforts last time out.
The second runner for the Snowden stable in The Roses field, Stratum filly Self Esteem was ninth in the ATC Oaks two back after her fourth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and her second to Imposing Lass in the Bracelet two weeks ago caught the eye.
She did it tough at the Gold Coast on AD Hollindale Stakes Day from barrier 14 of 14, the same gate allocated this weekend, but she’ll come in to 12 if the emergencies fail to get a run in The Roses.
Chandana is one of two in the mix for Chris Waller, Hugh Bowman riding the High Chaparral filly who is up in class after a second at Rosehill over 1900m on May 7.
The best of the double figure fancies after the upset meanwhile include Princess Stakes winner at the Sunshine Cost on April 23 Look To The Stars ($16), runner-up in the same mile showdown Queen Of Wands ($17) and the in-form Toby Edmonds-trained Lyricist ($17) coming off three straight wins.
