After scratching out from last Saturday’s BTC Cup the Chris Waller-trained Counterattack is one of the headline entries for the Fred Best Classic 2016 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
Open to three-year-old gallopers, the $125,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) has attracted 23 nominations for this year’s edition on Doomben Cup Day.
Among the early nominees is Waller’s last start Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) runner to stablemate, subsequent BTC Cup third placegetter Japonisme, in Sydney.
The son of Redoute’s Choice is possibly targeting a quick back-up into the $750,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at the track on May 28, but will first get the chance to prove himself against his own age in the Fred Best Classic.
Hugh Bowman returns for Japan for the ride on the Group 1 placed colt who chases his first win since October last year.
Waller is also set to accept for in-form stablemate Sir Bacchus in the Fred Best Classic field this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the song of Sebring coming off back-to-back Rosehill wins over 1200m.
The other headline last start winner nominated for the Fred Best is Darren Weir’s Street Cry colt Rageese who is eyeing a run at Eagle Farm on June 11 in the $1.5 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
The youngster saluted at Sandown-Hillside on April 9 before a runaway 4.2 length victory in Morphettville’s Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m) on April 30.
Also coming off nice lead-up form is the Gary Moore-trained son of Stratum Takedown.
He was third behind Waller’s runners in the Arrowfield during ‘The Championships’ at Randwick before posting a win of his own in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on May 7.
The other best out of the Gold Coast Guineas nominated for the Fred Best Classic is Kevin Kamp’s Toowoomba-trained Collate filly Sold For Song who ran a close second defeated only a quarter length after overcoming barrier 15 of 16.
She has had five runs to date for two wins and three seconds, her latest victory being at Doomben in December’s Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m).
Between that and the Gold Coast Guineas she travelled to the Sunshine Coast and was second to Divine Centuri in the Listed Mick Dittman (1000m) on April 23.
There are a total of six fillies nominated to take on the boys in this weekend’s Fred Best Classic including also the Tony Gollan-trained Dee Nine Elle who has a top record at Doomben (6-1-2-2), Denmagic who comes off a second to Spill The Beans in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) and last October’s Group 1 Flight Stakes third placegetter Perignon.
Too Good To Refuse and Havasay meanwhile both come out of the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1630m) at the track on April 30 having run second and third respectively behind last Saturday’s Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) runner-up Cylinder Beach.
