2016 Rough Habit Plate Results: Mackintosh Wins Derby Lead-Up

The punters got a win in the last at Doomben Racecourse on BTC Cup Day with the Chris Waller-trained favourite Mackintosh scoring a dominant Rough Habit Plate 2016 win on way to next month’s Queensland Derby.

A three-year-old son of Pins, Mackintosh was all the rage on track and at the online bookies firming right into clear favouritism to take out this season’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

Last time out he won over 1500m at Hawkesbury and that form held in Queensland, jockey Blake Shinn guiding the progressive galloper to a gun all-the-way win in the traditional lead-up to the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 11.

Nicely out of the gates, Mackintosh and Shinn looked reluctant to lead but with on other takers for front running they slid up and controlled the race all the way to the line.

Still racing a little keenly putting his head up, the top fancy was able to roll along without too much trouble and produced a really nice kick in the home straight to get the job done for Waller and connections heading into the Queensland Derby that Waller won three years ago with Hawkspur (2013).

Triple-figure roughie of the Rough Habit Plate, Excellent Spirit also went forward to take the sit second behind Mackintosh while the filly Tap This travelled third on the inside of Kuttamurra Al from the local Robert Heathcote stables.

Desleigh Forster’s last start Gunsynd Classic winner Cylinder Beach meanwhile was travelling fifth and sixth throughout looking for the Group double at Doomben.

As the tempo slackened off at the 800m mark, the David Vandyke-trained last start Sunshine Coast winner over 1800m in the wet Brazen went forward out very wide starting his own run in earnest.

At the home turn Mackintosh ($2.05) was still on top, Cylinder Beach ($5.50) coming down the outside but unable to stop the winner who hit the line three lengths clear of the brave runner-up with Brazen ($18) in third adding value to the Rough Habit Plate trifecta.

Now is the perfect time to discover the benefits of betting online with Ladbrokes.com.au who are matching the first time deposits of new players dollar for dollar up to $500 with use of the code BETBONUS (excluding NSW) this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
