2016 Members’ Handicap Results: Jumbo Prince & Rudy Dead Heat

The stewards couldn’t split the first two past the post in Saturday’s Members’ Handicap 2016 at Doomben Racecourse with Jumbo Prince and Rudy declared dead-heat winners of the sixth on BTC Cup Day.

There was nothing in it on the line in this year’s $100,000 Listed Singapore Turf Club Trophy (Members’ Handicap) (1600m) despite the Michael Nolan-trained Toowoomba galloper Jumbo Prince looking to have won by the bob-of-the-head.

A photo finish resulted in a dead heat Members’ Handicap result however after a slashing late run by the Helen Page-trained top weight Rudy (59kg) who dove on the line and came away with a co-win in the mile feature.

After being fractious in the barriers, Outback Prince four-year-old Jumbo Prince jumped away brilliantly from gate four with Michael Cahill replacing James McDonald in the saddle.

McDonald was aboard the smart stallion only last Saturday when Jumbo Prince travelled to the Gold Coast and ran an eye-catching third to Coolring in the Listed Prime Ministers’ Cup (1400m).

On the quick seven-day turnaround he enjoyed the step up to a mile, which he hadn’t seen since his close fifth to Traveston Girl in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1650m) back in early December.

It was the local Tony Gollan-trained Show A Heart five-year-old Heart Of A Warrior, coming off nine straight top three runs at the Doomben track dating back to August last year, who won the battle for the lead.

He went up to sit ahead of My Quilter and Marple Miss, while Jumbo Prince tracked nicely just off the front runners in fourth.

Coming up to the turn at the 400m Marple Miss started to lose ground, but Jumbo Prince was coming with his run closing in on the frontrunner by the straight.

Jumbo Prince ($3.40) continued to come for Heart Of A Warrior and looked the winner until the Gold Coast-trained Red Dazzler five-year-old Rudy ($6.50), chasing his first win since the 2014 Villiers Stakes in Sydney, came with a brilliant run out wide from second last to challenge on the line.

Behind Jumbo Prince and Rudy to finish off the Members’ Handicap trifecta in third was Heart Of A Warrior ($9) who held on to place after leading them throughout.

The likely next-up run for the Members’ Handicap winners this season is a return to Doomben on May 28, Doomben 10,000 Day, for a shot at the $125,000 Group 3 Lord Mayors’ Cup (1600m) and then possibly onto the $250,000 Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) on June 4.
