2016 JRA Cup Results: Real Love Wins for Weir, Rawiller

Darren Weir’s classy mare Real Love made a real charge towards next month’s Brisbane Cup with Brad Rawiller guiding her to a late win in the JRA Cup 2016 at Doomben Racecourse on BTC Cup Day.

Previously prepared in Perth, the five-year-old daughter of Desert King charged home in the final stages of Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) to win her Brisbane race debut.

Best known for her 2015 Perth Cup success back in WA, Real Love ran third in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) over the two miles in mid-March before a last start second over 2000m at Caulfield on April 23.

With three weeks between runs, Rawiller back on board, only eight rivals to defeat and dropping to 56.5kg Real Love jumped the dominant $2.50 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au in the JRA Cup.

The field was led around by Robert Heathcote’s local hope Volkhere who took up front running ahead of Lock’s Legend and Jetset Lad who was tracking wide throughout in third.

Rawiller meanwhile had Real Love tracking mid-field in fifth just ahead of the David Vandyke-trained seven-year-old Sir John Hawkwood coming off a Group 3 third over the distance at Rosehill behind It’s Somewhat.

Conscious not to go too early on the favourite, Rawiller held back until the top of the straight and with 300m left to travel she started working down the outside.

Dehere seven-year-old Volkhere, ridden by Jeff Lloyd, was brave all the way but swamped late as Real Love moved up and took to the front.

On the line Real Love had a half-length to spare over Sir John Hawkwood ($4.40), who carried 1.5kg more than the winner’s 56.5kg, while Volkhere ($14) held for third.

It was a nice start to a three-ride card for Rawiller in Brisbane today after he opted to ride in Queensland over a trip to Adelaide to stay on Weir’s Chairman’s Stakes winner Howard Be Thy Name in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m).

The JRA Cup win also keeps Real Love on the path towards the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 11.
