A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
The South Australian Derby 2016 lights up Morphettville Racecourse this weekend in Adelaide, betting tips and the latest odds for the three-years-old feature.
Running as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:25pm (local), this year’s $500,000 Group 1 South Australian
Derby (2500m) is set to run at capacity with 16 runners including the emergency Dropped (10) coming in for the scratched Prince Of Pagoda (13).
Heading the latest South Australian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.70 and firming (in from $4.20) is the promising Michael Kent-trained New Approach colt Charlevoix.
He comes off a Listed win over 2400m at Sandown from early April and should handle the step up to 2500m with ease after taking out his last start by over two lengths.
The other major players in South Australian betting this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival are VRC St Leger winner over 2800m at Flemington last time out Cool Chap ($5.50), last start Chairman’s Stakes winner at the track Howard Be Thy Name ($5.50) who has never finished out of the top three and Tarquin ($7).
So will one of the best fancied youngsters get the job done on Saturday or is there value further down the markets from the likes of WATC Derby winning filly Arcadia Dream ($11) for last year’s winning trainer Grant Williams or the spring’s VRC Derby placegetter Etymology ($16)?
#1 Howard Be Thy Name ($5.50)
Hard to go past the flying Darren Weir-trained Redoute’s Choice colt Howard Be Thy Name who is yet to finish out of the money in his 10 career starts (10-4-3-3). He has won his past three straight including back-to-back wins in Adelaide at the Morphettville track he returns to for the Group 1. Last start produced a strong 2.3 length win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m), the traditional Derby lead-up and the form to follow this year. He only needs to handle the distance to win and looks every chance of doing it.
#5 Cool Chap ($5.50)
Lee & Anthony Freedman’s nicely-bred High Chaparral gelding has winning form up to 2800m so the 2500m is a non-issue. He comes off the Listed VRC St Leger success at Flemington, which he killed by 2.25 lengths, on the back of a second to Saturday’s favourite Charlevoix in the Galilee Final. Ticking plenty of boxes, is flying and only needs to overcome the wide alley, which historically in this race hasn’t been a problem.
#2 Royal Rumble ($19)
Like the value on offer for this local Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained local who looks the top of the Adelaide gallopers in this race. Another son of New Approach in the line-up, he has had six starts at the track for a win, three seconds and two thirds. He is also tested in Melbourne without disgrace, and his third in the Chairman’s Stakes at home last start was a solid effort. Think he’ll improve, but his winning form so far is only up to a mile so the distance is the test.
