2016 Rough Habit Plate Field Features Derby Hopes

The next traditional lead-up to the Queensland Derby runs at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday with a field of top three-year-old staying types contesting the Rough Habit Plate 2016.

Closing the BTC Cup Day card as Doomben Race 8 at 4:41pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m) has attracted a field of 14 youngsters.

One of the sure-to-be favourites for the weekend with an eye on a start in the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11 is the Desleigh Forster-trained Showcashing gelding Cylinder Beach.

Fourth to Press Statement in last year’s JJ Atkins as a juvenile, the galloper comes off a first-up win at Doomben when defeating Too Good To Refuse by a narrow margin in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1630m) on April 30.

He now shoots for back-to-back wins in the Rough Habit Plate from a gun barrier three draw with Michael Cahill retaining the ride.

Cylinder Beach is current favourite in all-in Queensland Derby betting paying $8 through Ladbrokes.com.au, a price set to firm if he runs well this weekend.

Forster has also accepted for I’m Belucci who is drawn out in barrier 12 in the Rough Habit Plate.

The Group 1 performing Captain Sonador colt is out to atone for his second last when 13th to his stablemate in the Gunsynd, albeit beaten only 4.3 lengths in a blanket finish.

The next best Gunsynd Classic graduate running in the rematch on Saturday is the fourth-placed Shotacross The Bow from the Eagle Farm stables of David Murphy.

Rothesay gelding Shotacross The Bow was defeated under a length in the Gunsynd from a wide barrier 10 (of 14) draw and is looking to turn the tables on Cylinder Beach from a better gate five this weekend.

Along with Cylinder Beach there are five other last start winners in this year’s Rough Habit Plate field including the Chris Waller-trained Mackintosh jumping from a nice barrier four draw with Blake Shinn aboard.

The New Zealand-bred Pins gelding ran second last (12th) in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) firs-tup on March 5 but atoned in easier company with a good win over Man Of Choice at Hawkesbury late last month.

Waller has a total of three runners in this year’s Rough Habit with Mackintosh joined by Tulloch Stakes placegetter behind Old North at Rosehill two back Multifacets (8) and Hinchinbrook gelding Trafalgar (9) who makes his Black-Type debut on Saturday.

Other three-year-olds coming off a win include the John O’Shea-trained Eschiele out wide in gate 13 with Brisbane hoop Damian Browne booked for the ride and Excellent Spirit who has won two on the trot over the mile at the Sunshine Coast including his latest by six lengths on May 1.

Another notable Queensland Derby-bound youngster running on the weekend is the Bryan Guy-trained Eagle Way from the Gold Coast who pays $11 for the Group 1 in futures markets.

A winner of three on the trot last time in, the More Than Ready gelding is looking to improve on his Gunsynd Classic eighth last start when beaten under three lengths, improvement expected as he gets out over more distance this Saturday.
