Trainer Gerald Ryan is pleased with the condition of Spill The Beans, and has revealed the classy three-year-old will take his place in Saturday’s 2016 Scone Guineas (1400m).
Spill The Beans has been a strong and consistent performer for Ryan through his short but impressive racing career so far; posting four wins and a further two minors through only nine competitive appearances.
Having failed to fire in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, the Snitzel colt dominated from the outset in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) a fortnight ago; charging clear in the final straight to post a near-three length win.
Ryan told AAP he is still unsure of what went wrong for Spill The Beans in the Arrowfield Sprint, but is confident he will again perform the standard he displayed last time when he lines up for the 2016 Scone Guineas.
“I really don’t know what happened that day,” Ryan said.
“I’ve always thought he would go well over 1400 metres and he proved that at Hawkesbury.
“He has done nothing wrong since then so I’m hoping he can repeat what he did last time.”
Regular hoop Tim Clark has committed to ride a different horse in the 2016 Scone Guineas, but Ryan is pleased to have confirmed the services of James McDonald for the ride on Spill The Beans.
“James McDonald will ride him. Tim Clark had a commitment to another horse in the race so we were happy to get James,” Ryan said.
Spill The Beans immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow upon debuting to racing for success in the TAB.com.au Maiden (1100m) in May last year; progressing to a similarly-impressive win in the Australian Jewellery Liquidators Plate (1100m) before returning to the paddock with a view towards spring.
Clearly requiring a run when sixth in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) upon resuming in October, Spill The Beans ran a close second in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) before ending his year third in the Flemington Fling (1000m) on Melbourne Cup Day.
Resuming this year for success in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m), Spill The Beans ran fourth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in his only other start prior to the Arrowfield sprint.
The 2016 Scone Guineas field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
