Mighty Lucky Tops 2016 Scone Cup Nominations & Weights

This Friday the Scone Cup 2016 takes centre stage in the Hunger Region in NSW, nominations for the mile feature led by the Fred Cowell-trained Mighty Lucky.

A total of 32 horses are entered for this year’s $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m), weights for the handicap clash headed by Casino Prince six-year-old Mighty Lucky with 60kg.

Back in 2014 Mighty Lucky won the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone before his sixth in the same race last year.

He has been in very good form over the past six months including his Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) success at Randwick on Boxing Day.

Mighty Lucky returned on April 16 winning over 1400m at the same track carrying 61.5kg before a brave last start second to Amovatio in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) with 58kg on his back in late April.

Following in the Scone Cup weights on 59.5kg is the Chris Waller-trained Hawkesbury Cup winner Amovatio who, if accepted, will rise three kilos from the 56.5kg he carried to victory over Mighty Lucky last start.

The five-year-old Al Maher gelding is yet to race at Scone, but from nine starts over the 1600m boasts a great record of four wins, a second and a third.

Waller has also nominated for the reigning Scone Cup winner Tales Of Grimm, a veteran seven-year-old out to improve on a seventh when beaten four lengths in the Hawkesbury Cup after running second in the same feature in 2015.

The imported Tales Of Grimm won the race 12 months ago narrowly defeating Frespanol with 54kg on his back, and only rises a half-kilo to 54.5kg this year.

The heaviest weighted mare among the Scone Cup entries is the Mike Van Gestel-trained five-year-old Casino Dancer (55.5kg) coming off a third when beaten under a length in the Hawkesbury Cup.

A group 1 performed daughter of Casino Prince, Casino Dancer is untested at Scone and has won just one of her 14 previous starts over a mile.

Also weighted above the 54kg minimum are the likes of last year’s Epsom Handicap third placegetter behind Winx Sons Of John (56.5kg) and the John O’Shea-trained Malice (55kg) who ran fifth in the Hawkesbury Cup.

Coming off a stakes win over the distance at the Sunshine Coast in Queensland is the Robert Heathcote-trained Bewhatyouwannabe who gets in on the 54kg again for a Scone Cup bid.

A veteran of 41 starts, the six-year-old is untested outside of Queensland but is a five-time winner over the mile and in top form after his recent Tails Stakes success.

Another notable entry adding even more interest to the Friday afternoon clash is the Kris Lees-trained Italian import Goldstream.

The Italian Derby winner debuted down under finished dead last behind English in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 16, but has won a subsequent Wyong trial and will be better for the run.

The action of the Scone Cup Carnival continues on Saturday with the meeting headlined by the fillies and mares facing off in the $200,000 Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m).
