Group racing in Adelaide on Saturday gets underway with the DC McKay Stakes 2016, betting tips for the sprint feature found below.
Set to run as Morphettville Race 4 at 2:00pm (local), this year’s $120,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) features a field of 11 The Goodwood types.
At $3.80 in the latest DC McKay Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained former Singapore star Super One is current favourite to salute.
He is yet to win down under and hasn’t raced since a failed 11th of 12 runners in Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) during the spring.
The I Am Invincible colt is tipped to atone first-up however in this much easier assignment where he should thrive fresh from barrier seven with Daniel Moor aboard on the 54.5kg minimum weight.
Next best in DC McKay Stakes betting this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival at $4.40 is the Darren Weir-trained Thermal Current who won the race 12 months ago.
He has had one victory since at Mornington on April 2 and comes off a fourth to Miss Promiscuity in Caulfield’s VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m).
So can the top two in the markets run the quinella or is there value to be found tipping an upset DC McKay Stakes result from the likes of Phillip Stokes’ last start RN Irwin Stakes winner Nostradamus ($6), runner-up in the same Morphettville lead-up I Am Gypsy ($8), recent Manihi Classic winning six-year-old Daytona Grey ($12) from the rails or the John Hickmott-trained mare Scratchy Lass ($11) shooting for three consecutive wins?
#3 Thermal Current ($4.40)
Tipping Weir’s Exceed And Excel gelding to secure back-to-back DC McKay Stakes victories. The five-year-old enjoyed the track to win last year and had been racing consistently in Melbourne this campaign. Won in Black-Type company two back before a fourth last start beaten only 1.6 lengths at Caulfield carrying 59kg. Drops to 57kg here and gets the gun run from barrier two with Damian Lane aboard for the first time since a third to Malaguerra down the Flemington straight in early March.
#2 Nostradamus ($6)
This local Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old drops from 58.5kg last start to 57.5kg and shoots for another Morphettville win after saluting over 1100m here in Group 3 class a fortnight ago. Adelaide’s top hoop Dom Tourneur retains the ride and the young stallion should enjoy a trouble-free run up on the speed from barrier three. If he can hold his position could be the one to beat again in similar company to his April 23 success.
#8 Scratchy Lass ($11)
Another local hope in flying form, this US Ranger mare saluted over 1200m here two back before a stakes’ win at Oakbank in late March. She’s won a subsequent 1000m trial, is a gun over the distance with three wins from four runs over the 1100m, has regular rider Jason Holder aboard and only needs to get across from the outside barrier (11) to finish in the money.
